Family Matters
August 21, 2023 to November 09, 2023
Family Matters incorporates memory, metaphor and allegory to express the challenges, burdens and joys of an artist’s role as daughter and caretaker of her elderly parents. When her parents faced a daunting move into assisted living, they were struggling after a series of strokes with memory loss and the decline of their cognitive abilities. Using childhood possessions, and simple items that had been in the family for years, Jane Szabo creates tableaus that hint at complicated family dynamics. The presentation of these objects is not merely a catalog of possessions, but a catalog of feelings: pain and disappointment, burden and loss, memory and hope.
Read moreWhat You Carry: A Sabbatical Exhibition by Sarah Meyer
March 20, 2023 to June 01, 2023
For several years, Los Angeles-based artist Sarah A. Meyer has been hiking and backpacking to seemingly forgotten places and observing the cultural stewardship of open spaces. During her professional sabbatical leave, she intensified her exploration to include routes traversed by ancient peoples since the Paleolithic period. Using only what she can carry, Meyer provides an intimate window into the wild places that connect people to the natural world. Using diffused colors and the written form, the culmination is an interdisciplinary body of work that chronicles the plein air experience, and poetically maps Meyer’s internal transformation as a designer. Hike your own hike…it will change you. – Sarah A Meyer

January 21, 2020 to September 16, 2021
Enter a toy shop of childhood fantasy, fun and games! But look closely: what you think you see, may not be what you think. Well-loved toys and plush animals gradually melt into a melancholy menagerie of misfits, displaying their busted and corroded wheels, sorrowful and broken faces, and worn-out and rusty exteriors. On display are the nostalgic elements of one’s youth –a toy box of whimsy, over-stuffed with humor and symbolism. Upon first glance, they are full of joyful memories. Upon closer look, they are aged and ragged, unmasking the gloomy overtones of childhood desolation.

February 28, 2015 to April 18, 2015
Roxene Rockwell’s work is primarily about layering and using nature, trees in particular, to symbolize humankind and life’s experiences. For Rockwell, using the tree image is very personal and complex. A single tree has the power to represent the human condition, as we stand morally strong, alone, or physically frail, bending resiliently with the wind, or succumbing to the storm. However, to Rockwell, trees also show visible scars and life experiences so much more so than humans do.
