This exhibition presents the art of three Southern California artists, each exploring a personal engagement with nature through varied means. In photographs, drawings and paintings, their work is animated by a curiosity and a sense of wonder for the complexity and beauty of the natural world.

Cross Currents Exhibition

Crystal Yachin Lee
Born in Taiwan, Lee received an MFA in Communication Arts and Design from Virginia Commonwealth University. Starting with an international student work permit, she obtained a work visa and eventually received her permanent residency in the U.S. through her fulltime employment. Lee became a U.S. citizen in 2006.
Prior to relocating to Orange County, California in 2002, Lee was employed by a northern Virginia design firm as an environmental graphic designer, creating museum exhibitions for over five years. Some of the exhibition projects she worked on include The U.S. Capitol Botanic Garden, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington D.C., the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore, Maryland, the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, Virginia and the Texas History Museum in Austin, Texas.
Lee is a full professor of Visual Communication Design in the Department of Art at Cal Poly Pomona. She teaches various courses in Visual Communication Design and exhibits her digital photography as her scholarly activity. She has actively participated in near 50 solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums in the United States since 2003.

Shari Wasson
Shari Wasson is an artist and educator living and working in Southern California. She holds an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of New Mexico, and a BFA in Painting and Drawing from California State University, Fullerton.
Wasson’s art practice encompasses drawing, painting, and installation, and is informed by the poetics, dualities and paradoxes of commonplace phenomena and experiences. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries in the United States, and is in private collections.
Wasson has taught at the college level since 1998, and has served as director and curator of two galleries: the W. Keith and Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery at Cal Poly, Pomona, and the SCA Gallery in downtown Pomona. She is a full-time Professor of Fine Art at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA.
Joe Forkan
Joe Forkan is a figurative and landscape painter who lives and works in Southern California. He was born in Walden, New York, and grew up in Tucson, Arizona, where he received his BFA from the University of Arizona in 1989. He received an MFA in Painting from the University of Delaware in 2002. He is currently Professor of Art at California State University Fullerton.
Perceptually based figurative and landscape painting inform much of Forkan’s work (Grid Work, The Spurgeon Paintings) in which perception, color, and painting as a language are primary concerns.
He tends to work in series, which allows for the exploration of varied themes and approaches.
