Gallery Assistant Positions

Now Hiring. Kellogg and Huntley Galleries. W. Keith and Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery. Required. Student must be eligible for Work Study. The University Art Galleries (Kellogg University Art Gallery and Huntley Gallery) and the University Permanent Collections, under the oversight of the College of Environmental Design, are managed with the assistance of Cal Poly Pomona Student Assistants. Positions are designed specifically to manage different components of Art Galleries and Collections Practices, with a student’s major as a consideration in their assigned duties in order to help serve the Gallery and Collections needs, while also benefiting the student in on-campus employment and resume and career-building skills.

Required Duties

Required duties for all positions also include gallery sitting (greeting patrons, attendance-taking, monitoring visitor surveys, providing security for artworks), occasional cash handling, general gallery maintenance (painting, cleaning, etc.), assisting with installation and de-installation of artwork (assist in moving temporary walls, sculpture stands, art handling, hanging and presenting artwork, un-packing and packing of artwork, lighting artwork, installing labels and didactics, etc.), assisting with receptions and events, promotion through social media, and additional administrative and clerical duties. Other assignments based on major but not limited to: designing gallery graphics, didactics and marketing materials; assisting in designing exhibit spaces and layout or artworks, design of office spaces with artworks, oversight of the workshop/woodshop, lighting design; management of mailing lists, archiving show materials, content design for labeling artworks for exhibitions; inventorying and tracking of artworks, collections data and image management; inventory of supplies, sculpture stands, lighting components; promotion of events through printed collateral and digital and social media; and more.

All students must have the following qualifications to apply:

Qualifications Required: reliability; attention to detail; sensitivity to art as a form of expression; flexibility with regard to necessary scheduled hours especially during installation/de-installation times (always outside of student’s scheduled classes); moderate lifting ability; ability to climb a ladder, paint walls, use some basic tools (hammer, drill, sander, box cutter/X-acto knife) as needed; knowledge of MAC computers and Microsoft Office, incl. Word, Excel and PowerPoint; basic math and measuring skills; ability to get along with others in a team-oriented environment, while still able to work diligently on projects on one's own, and successfully managing project deadlines. Some basic knowledge of Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, In Design. After Effects or Premier Pro, Rhino 3D and Unreal Engine (or similar) is beneficial but not required.

Prospective candidates must have, and maintain, an overall 3.0 GPA or greater, and be eligible for Work Study (WS) Award through Financial Aid.

Work Study (WS) is a State Funded Program that allows employment to be subsidized by State Funding. It is not tuition assistance, nor is a student required to pay funds back. If a student qualifies for Financial Aid Assistance, grants, and special awards you may be eligible for WS. (If you qualify for loans only, you may not be eligible.) If WS-eligible, you may be placed on a Financial Aid wait list prior to receiving this WS award, but may still apply and interview for a Gallery Assistant Position in the meanwhile. All interviewees will be verified to be eligible and on the Wait List, or have an Award already granted, prior to any interview. In certain instances, job positions may be on hold until WS Award is granted.

Open to all grade levels: Freshman and Sophomores are encouraged to apply to potentially benefit with the position throughout their 4-5 year college education. Transfer students and upper-grad students (Juniors and Seniors) with over 1.5 years of schooling left, before graduation, are also encouraged to apply.

All Gallery Assistant Positions are a semi-permanent, part-time, on-campus undergraduate, student-only positions with the intent to hire prospective students for the duration of their undergraduate college experience, until they graduate. Due to the specialized and extensive training involved, only serious applicants are asked to apply.

Average hours: 12/week; 20/week max.; Summer/Winter/Spring Breaks: up to 40/week
