Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer Opportunities
Off-campus community member volunteers, retirees, college, high school and international students can assist the Kellogg and Huntley University Art Galleries with contributions of their time, knowledge, skills, and energy. We have several ongoing volunteer opportunities listed below:
Gallery Docent Program
Gallery docents help to staff the Front Desk in each of the University Art Galleries. Docents have the opportunity to interact with a wide range of students, faculty, staff, and visitors and to learn more about our wonderful campus, arts programs and temporary exhibitions. With additional docents we support our gallery open hours to the public on weekdays (M-Th from 12-4pm and 8-4pm, closed F) and on weekends (from 12-4pm) when exhibitions are up, and/or when special events (reception, lectures, symposiums) take place. Trained docents may also assist in engaging viewers with walking and talking exhibition tours of our temporary exhibitions
Exhibition Installation Volunteer
Exhibition Installers assist in the deinstallation and installation of artwork, sculpture stands and tech equipment needs between shows. Duties involve assisting trained staff with installation and de-installation of artwork including, but not limited to, art handling and hanging/presenting artwork with museums standard practices, un-packing/packing of artwork for shipping/receiving, lighting and labeling of artwork, placement of didactics, and general gallery maintenance such as painting, clean-up, etc. Hours vary depending on need, but generally includes weekdays, especially Friday and weekends.
University Art Collections Volunteer
Would you enjoy helping us with researching artists and artworks for future exhibits, conduct oral history interviews, participate in accessioning and processing collections, photograph identification and indexing, or archival preservation projects? This involves learning some unique skills: art collection inventory, cataloguing, archiving, digitizing and photo-documenting collections, handling art and learning art preservation, installation, packing and storage skills. Hours vary depending on project needs, but generally includes weekdays (M-Th from 10am-4pm).
