Department of Sociology Welcomes Hollencrest Middle School Students

Hollencrest Middle School 8th Students begin their visit at Cal Poly Pomona... exploring CPP's Japanese garden, Rose Garden, ponds, architecture, and Rain Bird Bio Trek before joining a lecture...

Sixteen Students from the AVID Program at Hollencrest Middle School visited the Department of Sociology on 9/28/23. The schedule included:
  • A campus walking tour.
  • A lecture.
  • Two sessions with faculty and CPP students about our programs in the Sociology Department.
In small groups, 8th graders had an opportunity to ask questions. After these informal sessions, a visit to the BRIC and seeing the climbing wall was on the agenda. 

Middle School Students attend Dr. Fong's Contemporary Sociology Class.

The Lecture was titled Herbert Marcuse's notion of one dimensionality. Dr. Fong exemplifies Marcuse's concept of one dimensionality through examples of mass media and mass culture, displaying various advertisements.

The 8th graders had a chance to speak with members of the Criminology Club about CPP and their student experiences.

Jasmine Penate, a Peer Mentor and an e-board member of the AKD Sociology Honors Society, talks to 8th graders about research - what she enjoys about research and what she would like to do after graduating from Cal Poly. Her McNair research project examines Factors that contribute to a shift away from Indigenous Identities and Cultures to Mainstream Western Culture Among Indigenous Guatemalans. 

Sociology Department Fall Welcome Fair

A longstanding tradition. The Department of Sociology welcomes all students to a new academic year. Our Student Clubs take the opportunity to introduce themselves to their peers.
