Study Abroad

Course Approval Process

Prior to Applying: Review your remaining degree requirements and courses (with the help of your academic advisor, if needed) that you may be able to take abroad so that you can determine which study abroad courses can substitute for your CPP course requirements.

Once you have been officially accepted into a Study Abroad program, you can begin to work with your academic advisor to submit course pre-approval petitions.

Step 1: Connect with Your Academic Advisor

You should work with your college advisor to submit course pre-approval petitions for each course you plan to take abroad prior to your travel. Use CPP Connect to schedule an appointment.

Please plan to have alternate course options in case some of your petitions are denied or some of the courses are not offered or available upon arrival. For example, if you are planning to only take 4 courses abroad, work with your advisor to submit a few additional course pre-approvals.

Step 2: Submit Documentation

Once your academic advisor initiates your pre-approval petitions, you will get links emailed to you for uploading your documentation. You should attach the requested documents (course descriptions, syllabi, etc.) within 10 days. NOTE: If you do not complete this step, your petition will be cancelled.

After you submit documentation, you will get emails as your petitions are either approved or denied. If your petitions are denied, work with your advisor to find additional options or provide further evidence as appropriate. If your course selection changes at any time, you should submit updated course petitions.

Step 3: Academic Planning Form (if applicable)

Some programs require an additional academic planning form to be completed. You will receive these forms from your study abroad provider. Your academic advisor can sign your forms once courses are pre-approved.

Step 3: Take Your Classes Abroad

Enjoy your program and your time overseas!

Step 4: Transcripts

Official transcripts from your host university or program will be sent directly back to the Office of Study Abroad after your program ends. Please allow at least 90 days or more after program completion for transcripts to be received.

Step 5: Getting Your Credit Back to CPP

Depending on what study abroad program you are enrolled in, your credit and grades will be transferred back as one of the following:

• CPP Credit {Faculty-Led} Counts towards your CPP GPA

• Resident Credit {CSU-IP Program} Counts towards your CPP GPA

• Transfer Credit {Exchange, Affiliate, Non-CSU Programs} Counts towards your overall GPA

See your academic advisor for more information.
