Guitar Ensemble
The Guitar Ensemble uses high-quality music to explore and assert the guitar’s role as our most versatile and popular world instrument. Guitarists of all backgrounds work together to sound ancient echoes and new possibilities. The group regularly collaborates with composers such as Joseph Klein, Randall Kohl, Daniel Kessner, Garry Eister and members of the group itself. Former ensemble director Peter Yates, now retired, led more than 100 concerts with the group, some of whose graduates have gone on to found innovative chamber ensembles including FeatherWolf and the Electric 8. Collaboration extends to other performers and media, as when Garry Eister’s ballet SLEEP, using acoustic, electric and microtonal guitars, was commissioned by the ensemble and performed at microfest in partnership with Cal Poly’s Department of Theatre and New Dance.
