Bachelor of Music (BM)
Pedagogy Option (Pre-credential)
The Bachelor of Music with an option in Pedagogy (Music Education Pre-credential) is ideal for musicians who aspire to teach music, particularly in public schools.
This option satisfies the "Subject Matter Competence" requirement for music teacher credentialing in California.
After completing the Bachelor’s degree, you will need to complete a one-year post-baccalaureate Single Subject Credential Program, which focuses on teaching skills, educational psychology, and the social and legal responsibilities of schools.
At Cal Poly Pomona, our faculty advisor, Dr. Janine Riveire, works closely with the Single Subject Credential Program, which requires 131 undergraduate units and 36 post-baccalaureate units. The post-baccalaureate units are administered by the Department of Education in the College of Education and Integrative Studies, and there is a separate application process for this credential program.
This option also provides excellent preparation for those interested in working with youth in musical organizations, after-school programs, private schools, or pursuing graduate study in music therapy.
Many graduates of Cal Poly Pomona’s Music Education option and Single Subject Credential program are now teaching in nearby school districts and serve as mentors to our current students during their clinical practice. Over the past 15 years, graduates have gone on to successful teaching careers across California, while others have pursued opportunities in performing, private teaching, composing, music therapy, and further graduate study.
If you are applying directly to the BM in Pedagogy (Pre-credential), you must audition on your primary instrument or voice to demonstrate your foundational music knowledge.
All styles of music are welcome, and you are encouraged to present what best showcases your skills.
The curriculum will include classical music along with other traditions and styles tailored to your interests.
You will also be invited for an on-campus interview and audition. The interview helps us understand who you are and what you hope to achieve through your education and degree. If you are unable to attend in person, an online interview and audition can be arranged.
Many students in the Pedagogy option at Cal Poly Pomona choose to stay at CPP to complete their single subject credential. The Credential Program allows you, as a CPP student with senior standing, to take four "prerequisite" courses while still an undergraduate, which can shorten the time needed to complete the credential to just two semesters.
Be sure to stay in regular contact with Dr. Janine Riveire, the Single Subject Advisor for the Credential Program, who can keep you informed about the latest requirements and guide you through the process.
