Mathematics and Statistics Scholarship Opportunities

General Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics Scholarship Program is designed to provide encouragement and public recognition to students who have demonstrated academic excellence. The program is supported by generous contributions from individuals, organizations, corporations and foundations. The minimum awards range from $250 to $1000 per year (subject to fund availability) and are available for both undergraduate and graduate students for the entire academic year.  Award recipients for the succeeding school year will be announced each Spring semester.

The primary criterion for awards from the Department of Mathematics and Statistic Scholarship Program is outstanding scholarship by our majors. Restrictions apply to some awards, such as major track. Your accurate completion of the scholarship application form will ensure you are considered for every scholarship for which you qualify.

Application Dealines 

The application period for scholarships for a particular academic year generally begin in the winter of the preceeding year, with applications generally due in March or April of the preceeding year.

Application Instructions 

Scholarship applications are to be submitted using the CPP Bronco Scholarship Portal (BSP) online system using the following steps:

  1. Log in to the BSP at https://csupomona.academicworks.com/.
  2. Complete and submit your General Application.
  3. If you are eligible to apply, the left-hand panel in the BSP will list the College of Science – Math - Mathematics and Statistics Scholarships.  By applying to this scholarship, you will be considered for multiple Department of Mathematics and Statistics scholarships, as listed below.

The John and Rosetrina Flaig Mathematics Scholarship 

The annual award(s) for this scholarship is for $1000, with one (or more) award(s) available. A minimum overall GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) is required. This scholarship is for students that exhibit exceptional ability and diligence to pursue their academic interests for the betterment of the individual and society. Each recipient must have demonstrated financial need. Any qualified undergraduate or graduate Math Major is eligible to apply.  Each recipient must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at Cal Poly Pomona during the entire academic year of the award.  U.S. citizenship is not required.  One letter of recommendation is required.

Stuart Friedman Memorial Scholarship 

 The annual award(s) for this scholarship is for a minimum of $250, with one (or more) award(s) available. A minimum math/stats core GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required. The award(s) is(are) restricted to Math Majors who have completed at least one upper division or graduate STA elective.  Each recipient must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at Cal Poly Pomona during the entire academic year of the award.  U.S. citizenship is not required.

Armando Gallegos Memorial Mathematics Endowed Scholarship

The annual award(s) for this scholarship is for a minimum of $500, with one (or more) award(s) available. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required. Each recipient must have demonstrated financial need. The Armando Gallegos Mathematics Endowed Scholarship is dedicated to assisting promising students and their families that are otherwise financially unable to attend California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.  Each recipient must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate math major at Cal Poly Pomona during the entire academic year of the award.  U.S. citizenship is not required.

Samuel Gendelman Memorial Scholarship

The annual award for this scholarship is for a minimum of $1000 and a maximum of $1500, with at least one award available. A minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) is required. Each recipient must have demonstrated financial need.  Each recipient must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate math major at Cal Poly Pomona during the entire academic year of the award.  Each recipient must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.  Two letters of recommendation are required.

Dr. Emil R. Herzog Department Scholarship

The annual award for this scholarship is for a minimum of $250, with at least one award available. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and a minimum math core GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) are required.  Each recipient must be enrolled as a senior or graduate student at Cal Poly Pomona during the entire academic year of the award and must have been in a Cal Poly Pomona Mathematics Degree Program for at least one year prior to the award.  U.S. citizenship is not required.  Two letters of recommendation are required.

The Mr. & Mrs. Keith Soon Kim Mathematics and Science Scholarship

This scholarship was established with a donation and pledge of $10,000 from Mr. And Mrs. Kim and a match of $3,000 from the Xerox Foundation to recognize students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to the study and understanding of Mathematics and Science. The annual award for this scholarship is for a minimum of $500, with at least one award available. A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and a minimum math core GPA of 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale) are required. Financial need may be a factor considered in the selection process. If you would like financial need to be considered, you must explain how this award would benefit you. Each recipient must enrolled at Cal Poly Pomona during the entire academic year of the award.  Any qualified undergraduate or graduate math major is eligible to apply.  U.S. citizenship is not required.  Two letters of recommendation are required.

Kenneth B. Kriege Mathematics Department Scholarship

The annual award(s) for this scholarship is for a minimum of $500, with at least one award available. A minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in both math core and overall is required. Eligible persons must have been enrolled in one of the degree programs in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for at least one year prior to scholarship deadline. Candidates must apply for the scholarship through the University Scholarship Program and must include all University Scholarship Program materials.  Each recipient must be enrolled as a full-time junior, senior, or graduate student at Cal Poly Pomona during the entire academic year of the award.  U.S. citizenship is not required.

John and Mary O'Neil Mathematics Scholarship Fund

The John and Mary O'Neil Mathematics Scholarship Fund was created to support Mathematics majors in the College of Science.  A single potentially-renewable scholarship of $2500 will be available to be held in each of academic years 2022-2023, 2023-2024, 2024-2025, and 2025-2026, yielding a total of four scholarships.  A minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required.  Each recipient must have demonstrated financial need related to the university's annual cost of attendance.  Each recipient must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate Math major at Cal Poly Pomona during the entire academic year of the award.  Each recipient must be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior when holding the award.  Each recipient must be a U.S. citizen and California resident.

Dr. Kamta Rai Statistics Scholarship

The annual award(s) for this scholarship is for a minimum of $2000, with at least one award available.  A minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in both math/stats core and overall is required.  The award(s) is(are) restricted to Math Majors who have completed at least two upper division or graduate level Cal Poly Pomona STA electives and received an A- or better in at least two such STA electives.  Each recipient must be enrolled as a full-time junior, senior, or graduate student at Cal Poly Pomona during the entire academic year of the award.  Applicants are required to submit a personal statement to share their educational and career aspirations as they relate to the field of Statistics and how this scholarship will assist them in achieving their goals.
