Who is Diana?

Diana Ascencio has been an Academic Advisor in the College of Science since 2019. She is a recent graduate from Cal State Fullerton's Master of Science in Education program with an emphasis in Higher Education, and a CPP Alumni from the College of Business with a Management and Human Resources Bachelor of Science. 

In her undergraduate career, Diana was heavily involved with various groups and organizations on campus. Some of those included DEPIE (the undocumented student club) in various roles, the Multicultural Council as Vice President, and ASI Student Government as Vice President. Diana also worked on campus in the Cesar E. Chavez Center for Higher Education as a Social Justice Leader, Orientation Services as an Office Staff, the PolyTransfer Center as the Educational Equity and Access Intern, and Undocumented Student Services as a Program Assistant. 

While in her master's program, Diana spent her time at Fullerton College coordinating a math program to aid students in developing basic math skills to gain skills and confidence to be successful in their college-level/transferable math courses. She also briefly worked as a Residential Education Supervisor at the University Village under CPP Foundation.

Diana is excited to continue enhancing student development and their experiences in the College of Science by connecting students to key resources during advising sessions.

Lorena Roman is a first-generation, bilingual, Latina educator who views higher education as a means of social justice.  She looks forward to partnering with students to help them navigate through their educational journeys.

Lorena received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology at UC Riverside and her Master of Science Degree in Counseling with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential from Cal State Northridge.  She obtained her second Master's Degree in Education with a specialization in Student Affairs from UCLA.

Before joining Cal Poly Pomona, she advised undergraduate students in the departments of Psychology, Economics, and Political Science at UCR. Previous to her higher education work, she served as a school counselor for a charter school in the San Fernando Valley.  

Lorena enjoys reading, hiking, attending concerts, and Dodger games.  She loves spending time with her son and her husband as a family.

Who is Diana?

Diana Curtis started her journey in higher education in 2016 as a G.A., teaching classes while pursuing her master’s degree. After graduation, Diana continued as a faculty member and later transitioned into advising roles. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and a Master of Science in Mathematics from CPP.  Diana is proud to be a Cal. Poly. Pomona Alumni!  

By directly working with students in the STEM field, Diana realized that she really enjoyed advising students. Diana loves helping students find resources so that they can be successful in their academics and careers.  

Diana enjoys working out by going to the gym, doing yoga, or hiking. She also has two pet rabbits whose names are Flops and Casper.

Ian Carlson joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics as an academic advisor in the College of Science at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in May of 2009. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies from California State University, Fullerton, and a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) from the University of Southern California.

Prior to his advising role at Cal Poly Pomona, Ian taught classes in advanced placement United States history and world history at Pomona Catholic High School. Preceding this he taught English as a second language in Seoul, Korea.

Christian Gomez grew up near Cal Poly Pomona for most of his life knowing of our fabulous University. He went to MT. SAC in 2018 from where he went on to go and get his Bachelors Degree at the University of California San Diego, then his Masters Degree in Education Counseling at San Diego State University. He started his higher education journey at UCSD where he was a Peer Coach and later a Graduate Assistant who met with students in order to get them acclimated to their new university and make sure they had all the resources they need to succeed!

Christian worked directly with students talking about academia but also focused on how to further help students mentally and socially. Helping students find community and academic success during their time at the University. He is always willing to chat and help students succeed in their higher education journey.

He loves watching and playing soccer and has a passion for both cooking and baking! So do not be a stranger and talk with him he is excited to assist and talk with all of you! 

Mario Tapia is a first-generation college graduate from El Monte, California. He served his community as a youth leader and coach, while pursuing his education at Rio Hondo College. After transferring to Cal Sate LA, Mario earned his bachelor’s degree in Sociology. His career path led him to support students with disabilities and evolved into a career in higher education.

As an advisor, Mario reflects on his own college challenges to provide empathetic support to students as they navigate the journey. Mario believes in the potential of every student to succeed in making their dreams a reality. He emphasizes the importance regular meetings with students to ensure they receive the support they need.

Outside of advising, Mario enjoys a good sandwich, going on walks, and continuous learning. 

Who is Sheila?

Sheila is a first-generation college student who is very passionate about working in higher education and helping college students reach their educational goals.

Sheila holds a Master of Science degree in Administration of Justice and Security from the University of Phoenix. With over a decade of experience in higher education, she has worked in diverse roles, including two years as a Student Services Specialist in Disability Support Services, five years as a Transfer Evaluator in the Admissions Department, and four years as an Enrollment Counselor and Outreach Representative.

Beyond her career, Sheila has a passion for music, movies, and interior design.
