Kyle Chao
Class of 2024
Kyle graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 2024 with a BA in Political Science and minors in Music and Data Science. Since graduating, Kyle has spent a summer with the Upward Bound program at USC, teaching Administrative Justice courses to high school students for college credit and playing with various music ensembles in LA. His legal interests lie primarily in Energy & Project Development law, and he will spend his 1L summer with the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office as a Law Clerk. CPP has helped him achieve his professional goals through professional-oriented programs like the Judicial Internship course taught by Dr. Menounou.
Advice for current pre-law students: Prospective law students should do a legal-related internship prior to applying to law school and explore whether they truly want to pursue a legal career because it is time-consuming and a massive investment and also take a gap year to enjoy life before starting law school and their legal career!
Kiana Jokar
Class of 2023
My name is Kiana Jokar, and I graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a B.A. in Political Science. The department played a major role in shaping me as both a public speaker and a stronger writer. Through the Model National Org. of American States program, I had the opportunity to speak at international relations conferences in D.C., and the Senior Thesis Program helped me hone advanced writing and research skills. One of my favorite memories from CPP was studying abroad in Japan, an experience that broadened my perspectives and enriched my academic journey. I am now entering my second year of law school at Chapman University, where I was awarded the full-ride Dean's Merit Scholarship and the Distinguished Student Fellowship.
My advice to current pre-law students is to find your niche and connect with your pre-law advisors. My advisors at CPP were instrumental in helping with LSAT resources and guiding me in choosing the best scholarship offer from the law schools I applied to. I also highly recommend doing unique and niche activities because my law firm employers always ask about those distinct experiences on my resume, like study abroad Japan.

Edgar Orozco
Class of 2020
Edgar Orozco is a 2020 Cal Poly Pomona graduate. He is graduating from Columbia Law this May of 2025. Since graduating from Cal Poly Pomona, Edgar spent two years between undergraduate school and law school, working for a family law firm in Riverside, California. His interest in law stemmed from a fascination with the legal system and a need for understanding its laws, given his parents migrating from Zacatecas, Mexico, to Riverside, California. Edgar has maintained the same energy and passion for extracurriculars that were rooted since his time at Cal Poly Pomona. At CPP, he enjoyed spending endless hours in the library researching for the award-winning Model UN Team under Doctor Scarcelli. His favorite course at Cal Poly was Dr. Guerrero’s American Presidency.
At Columbia Law School, Edgar has served as Teaching Assistant to 3 professors, Vice President of the Domestic Violence Project, and an Editor to the School’s Blog on Corporate Governance called Columbia Law Blue Sky Blog. Edgar will enter Freshfields Law Firm Fall of 2025, a top firm specializing in Corporate Litigation and Federal Securities Law for companies in Silicon Valley, CA.
His biggest advice for undergraduate students is to utilize all of your resources, join clubs, speak to professors during office hours, and to never be afraid of pinging CPP Alumni who are in a field of your interest (thank you, Jose Contreras, CPP Class of 2016). He still maintains strong contact with the Political Science Department at Cal Poly Pomona, giving advice to every year’s Model UN team, as well as giving advice to Professor Menounou’s Judicial Internship course. He invites students to connect with him via LinkedIn for any tips or advice.
