Subject: Community Safety Advisory - Coyote Encounter on Campus

Dear Campus Community,

A Cal Poly Pomona student reported encountering a coyote and receiving a minor scratch near buildings 73 and 74 (new residence halls) during the early hours on Nov 5. University Police Department (UPD) investigated the report and learned that several other students reported being aggressively approached by the same or a different coyote.

The incidents have been reported to the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, and officials are working with UPD to address the issue. UPD has also increased patrols in the area.

If You Encounter a Coyote and It Approaches

  1. Keep a safe distance
  2. Back away slowly and make loud noises — yell, clap, blow a whistle
  3. Make yourself look bigger by waving your arms
  4. Let the coyote leave the immediate area on its own
  5. If a coyote makes contact, fight back and call UPD as soon as you’re able. Contact UPD by calling 909-869-3070 or using a blue light phone on campus.
