Dear Cal Poly Pomona and University Village Community Members,
Content warning: This advisory includes an incident of sexual assault that may be distressing. If this content is difficult to read, please seek support from the resources below.
On June 4 at about 7:00 p.m. an individual unaffiliated with Cal Poly Pomona entered an apartment in the University Village and sexually assaulted a student resident, who did not know the individual. The student called for help, and University Police Department (UPD) officers quickly responded to the location and apprehended the suspect, who remains in custody. There are no other outstanding suspects and there is no ongoing threat to the campus community.
Anyone who may have further information related to this incident should contact UPD at 909-869-3070.
We believe this was an isolated incident by an individual acting alone, and no other suspects remain at large. Campus safety continues to be our top priority, and UPD and other partners have responded by increasing patrols on and around the campus, including the University Village.
Please take the time to review the safety tips and resources for students, faculty and staff.

Sexual Violence Prevention Tips
Sexual violence is never the fault of the victim. Here are some prevention tips everyone should consider. Visit the Office of Equity and Compliance website for more information about sexual violence prevention and resources.
General Facts About Sexual Violence
- Crime victims are not responsible for the behavior of perpetrators.
- Most commonly, sexual assault is perpetrated by someone the victim knows.
- Alcohol and drugs are often used to create vulnerability to sexual assaults. Studies of sexual assault incidences show a high correlation between sexual assault and drug/alcohol use.
- If you have been sexually assaulted, please know there are resources available to help you. Visit the Office of Equity and Compliance website for more information.
Bystander Intervention
- Be active in supporting a safe and respectful community. If you see others engaging in disrespectful or inappropriate actions, speak up and get involved, or contact someone else to assist.
- If you witness someone trying to lead an intoxicated person into a private room, or if you see someone providing another person with drinks or acting in a sexually aggressive manner, intervene or find help.
- Pay attention to your friends so that you can help them if they are being targeted or are in a vulnerable situation. If you feel threatened or too unsafe to intervene, call 9-1-1 or the University Police Department at 909-869-3070.
- If you witness something that doesn’t feel right, you can intervene.
- Create a distraction. Do what you can to interrupt the situation.
- Get help from others. It can be intimidating to intervene alone. Find a friend to help or find an authority figure like a RA, bouncer or security guard.
- Ask directly. You can ask the potential victim; “Who did you come here with?” “Would you like me to stay with you?” or “Are you OK?”
Alcohol, Drugs and Sexual Assault
- Be alert to people pressuring you or others to use alcohol or other drugs. Do not pressure others to drink or use drugs.
- Some sex offenders target people by using alcohol as a weapon. Get your own drinks, don’t leave your drink unattended, and don’t let someone continually fill your cup.
- Check in with yourself. Whether you drink regularly or not, check in with yourself periodically to register how you feel.
This is not an Emergency Notification or Timely Warning as defined in the Clery Act as there is no ongoing threat to the campus community.
