Join us in celebrating First-Gen Week 2024 from November 4-8! Honor the experiences of first-gen students at CPP with events, workshops, and resources. See our events below!  

Monday, November 4

First-Generation Graduates: Testimonios

Location: Ursa Major AB

Time: 10:30 a.m. to Noon

Join us for an inspiring event featuring Dr. Hector Chacon, Deputy District Director for State Senator Bob Archuleta, and Dr. Àlvaro Huerta, Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning. Hear their powerful testimonios on the importance of friendships, university service, and community impact. Lanae O'Shields ('09, psychology) will moderate the discussion.

Breaking the Silence: Navigating University Life as a First-Generation Student, hosted by Undocumented Student Services, this program encourages open dialogue and provides valuable insights to help first-gen students thrive.

Tuesday, November 5

Kick-Off and Resource Fair

Location: University Park

Time: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

As part of First-Gen Week 2024, join us for the kick-off celebration! Come learn about the different campus resources available to first-gen students. 

First-Gen Crew: Imposter Syndrome & Your Sense of Belonging

In-Person: Building 66-126

Time: Noon to 1 p.m.

This session is third in a series of four tutor-led meetings. The session will focus on the imposter syndrome and tips on how to address it and establish a sense of belonging at CPP.

Wednesday, November 6

Unwritten Rules: First-Gen's Guide to Success

Location: Online

Time: 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

As first-gen college students, we may not be aware of the unwritten rules or invisible forces that impact the academic environment. This presentation will review some unwritten rules that contribute to college success as well as some unwritten rules in the professional setting.

First-Gen on Tap!

Location: Innovation Brew Works

Time: 5 to 9 p.m.

As part of First-Gen Week, stop by and learn how you can be connected to a mentor/mentee and meet other first-gen students, faculty and staff in a fun and engaging environment. You can also feel good about eating and drinking for a cause! Proceeds from Innovation Brew Works purchases will go towards establishing a first-gen student scholarship. 

Thursday, November 7

Guest Speaker & Book Signing: Dr. Yvette Martinez-Vu & Dra. Miroslava Chavez-Garcia

Location: Bronco Student Center, Ursa Minor

Time: 9:30 to Noon

As part of First-Gen Week 2024, Dr. Yvette Martínez-Vu and Dr. Miroslava Chávez-Garcia will visit CPP to talk about their book, Is Grad School for Me? Demystifying the Application Process for First-Gen BIPOC Students.

Dr. Yvette Martínez-Vu is a grad school and productivity coach, consultant, and host of the top global-ranked Grad School Femtoring Podcast. She is also the co-editor of the best-selling Chicana M(other)work Anthology and founder of Grad School Femtoring, LLC, where she supports first-gen BIPOC folks in reaching their academic and personal goals. 

Dr. Miroslava Chávez-García is Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and is currently the Faculty Director of the UCSB McNair Scholars Program. She is author of Migrant Longing, States of Delinquency, and Negotiating Conquest.

Día De Los Muertos by CECCHE

Location: Bronco Commons

Time: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Join CECCHE for their 30th annual Dia de Los Muertos Celebration! With food sales, vendors, resource tables, club gatherings, arts and crafts, musical performances and more, this event is perfect to bring your family and friends! Come learn about Dia de Los Muertos and enjoy our vibrant celebration on November 7, 2024.

I Am First will host an ofrenda (altar): community members are invited to participate and share items for the altar to honor departed family members and friends. 

Friday, November 8

Volleyball Tailgate

Location: Kellogg Gym

Time: 4 to 7 p.m.

As part of First-Gen Week, hang out at our tailgate ahead of the CPP volleyball game against Cal State LA at 5 p.m. CPP students get into Bronco Athletics games for free with a Bronco ID card.
