Election Results

As polls begin to close locally and/or around the country, news networks will offer special coverage with updates to election results. In addition, the Elections Results website from the CA Secretary of State will update every five minutes as results are reported once the polls close. These updates will continue every two hours until all election day ballots are counted. Be patient — counting can take time!

The Electoral College - Presidential Elections

The U.S. presidential election is determined by the votes of electoral college members from each state, and three members from Washington D.C. In 48 of the 50 states, members cast all of their electoral college votes based on the popular vote in their state. The national electoral college is comprised of 538 members - a candidate needs to reach the 270 threshold to win the Presidency.
