Rules for the "69x" Courses

This is the current policy of the Computer Science Department regarding the courses 6910, 6950, 6960, and 6990.

Each course has a set of entry requirements which must be fulfilled at the time you begin the class. If you enroll in a course but are lacking a requirement, the department will drop you from the course.

CS 6910 (Directed Study)

REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must have achieved unconditional status and have discussed with your advisor regarding a potential research project to do for your project or thesis. Your advisor must submit a request to open a 6910 section.

PROCEDURE:

We offer multiple sections of 6910 for each faculty advisor, each with its own Course Request Number (CRN). These numbers change each quarter. You can find appropriate CRNs from Bronco Direct after your 6910 application is approved.

CS 6910 should be taken each semester until the project or thesis proposal is completed. It may be taken as many times as necessary, but a total of 1 unit of credit will be awarded for the project option and 2 units of credit will be awarded for the thesis option.

CS 6950 (Master's Degree Project)

REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must have been Advanced to Candidacy

  • You must have a final letter grade (not SP nor RP) in 1 unit of CS 6910.

  • Your advisor must submit a request to open a 6950 section. 

PROCEDURE:

We offer multiple sections of 6950 for each faculty advisor, each with its own Course Request Number (CRN). These numbers change each semester. You can find appropriate CRNs from Bronco Direct after your 6950 application is approved.

CS 6950 should be taken each semester until the project is completed and defended. It may be taken as many times as necessary, but a total of only 1 unit of credit will be awarded.

CS 6960 (Master's Degree Thesis)

REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must have been Advanced to Candidacy

  • You must have a final letter grade (not SP nor RP) in 2 units of CS 6910.

  • You must have filed a thesis proposal with the Graduate Coordinator. The proposal must conform to the department's format for thesis proposals, and it must be signed by three members of the faculty. Your advisor must submit a request to open a 6960 section.

PROCEDURE:

We offer multiple sections of 6960 for each faculty advisor, each with its own Course Request Number (CRN). These numbers change each semester. You can find appropriate CRNs from Bronco Direct after your 6960 application is approved.

CS 6960 should be taken each semester until the thesis is completed and defended. It may be taken as many times as necessary, but a total of only 3 units of credit will be awarded.

CS 6990 (Master's Degree Continuation)

REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must have completed 1 unit of CS 6950 or 3 units of CS 6960. An SP or RP grade is acceptable. Your advisor must submit a request to open a 6990 section.

PROCEDURE:

We offer one section of 6990 for each faculty advisor, and its Course Request Number (CRN) changes each semester. You can find the appropriate CRN from Bronco Direct after your 6990 application is approved
