Illustration of test tubes with chemical reaction clouds coming out of them. The side of the test says “Undergraduate Research.” The clouds say "Apply for research opportunities. Some programs include the Office of Undergrad Research, McNair Scholars and SEES,” “Contact faculty you are interested in working with about research opportunities,” “Look and apply for research grants, fellowships scholarships” and “Present your research at local conferences! Apply for travel funding through the Office of Undergraduate Research”

If you are a transfer student seeking opportunities for Undergraduate Research, feel free to review the Research Timeline infographic above in combination with our more detailed explanations below. Together, this information will provide you insight into how you can best get involved with Undergraduate Research here at Cal Poly Pomona.

If you are considering pursuing an advanced degree (e.g. Masters, PhD, etc.) or you are going into a professional field where research is a core component, you will want to consider applying for research opportunities. The best part is that you don’t need to have had any previous research experience!

How to Find Research Opportunities

Undergraduate Research Tips

  • It is highly encouraged you begin your undergraduate research efforts the fall semester of your junior year here at the university. The earlier you start your planning, the more opportunities you will ultimately have to complete research.
  • Attend the “Getting Started in Research” workshop provided by the OUR.
  • Visit Bronco ScholarWorks hosted by the University Library to see examples of past student research.
  • Sign up for the OUR Mailing List to learn about research opportunities.
  • Connect with past and current faculty members who taught classes you did well in. While they may not currently have research opportunities available, they may be able to direct you to those who do.
  • Consult with your faculty advisor for opportunities related to research.
  • Join the Research Scholars Association or attend research events.
  • Join research programs like Learn Through Discovery, and apply for opportunities like the Conference Presentation Award to help you with developing and/or completing research projects.
  • Publish and present your research whenever possible by attending conferences like the Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities (RSCA) Conference, participating in programs like the CARS Symposium and publishing your research through journals like REACH.
