About Poly-Kroma’s 2d3d+:
The 2023 2D3D+ Juried Art Exhibition features art and visual communication design work by Art Department students at all grade levels. This show, which began in the mid-1970s under the leadership of Professor Diane Divelbess, first took place inside the Cal Poly Pomona University Library just across the way from the Kellogg University Art Gallery, where it moved to in the early 1990s. The show, then called the Student Art Show, and later, 2d3d, was originally started to showcase artwork produced by Cal Poly Pomona’s students in the newly established Art Department. Displays of two-dimensional artforms such as painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, poster design, and book-making; three-dimensional arts such as pottery, ceramics, sculpture, assemblage, and installation art were the earlier artforms presented. As time and technology has evolved, more diverse and emerging artforms such as time-based media, digital and technical illustration, motion graphics, video, gaming and animation have become integral to the arts and creative processes at Cal Poly Pomona, and its forward-thinking Art Department. As this exhibition and its displayed artforms grow and bound forward, it has evolved now into 2d3d+ in order to capture the essences of 4D and 5D outcomes that the Art Department’s current student body produces as part of their polytechnic experience. As always, this annual event continues to delight the University campus and local community, as it has for over five decades.
After digitally reviewing 174 submissions with over 256 component parts by 92 students, each juror deliberated at length to make the 54 selections of artworks created by 46 students exhibited here. On first viewing, jurors focused on the “stand-outs” and artworks with most originality. On the subsequent rounds, they considered concept and craft. Overall, jurors considered craftsmanship and presentation, skill in technical use of media, as well as creative execution of content and concept. After making their final selections, the jurors honed-in on those pieces they suggested granting top prizes to: special images and objects that also contain unique qualities that set them apart from the rest. From there, jurors unanimously nominated First, Second, Third Place, and Honorable Mention Awards in the Fine Art and Visual Communication Design categories which are announced during our Opening Reception and 2d3d+ Award Ceremony on May 1, 2023.
Please join the Art Department, College of Environmental Design, and University Art Galleries in celebrating this year's students’ artwork through our Fine Art and Visual Communication Design events!

Join us on Family & Friends day for a post-commencement viewing!
This year’s 2D3D+ Juried Art Exhibition features Fine Art and Visual Communication Design by students at all academic levels. It is a juried competitive exhibition where students are awarded monetary scholarship prizes. This year’s exhibition was juried by: Visual Communications Design (VCD) Professional and Class of 2021 Alumna, Danielle Takata-Herring; Fine Artist, Curator & Educator, Betsy Lohrer Hall; and Class of 2017 Alumnus and Graphic Designer major (now known as VCD), Jared Boyle.
Welcome to Our 2023 Esteemed Jurors!
Danielle Takata-Herring, Juror Visual Communications Design Industry Professional & CPP Alumna
Takata-Herring co-started Dreambox Creations, an advertising agency, when she was just a second year at Cal Poly Pomona back in 1999. Directing all of the creative work at Dreambox from day one, Danielle is a company cofounder and co-owner who has seen it all. Working with Dreambox’s worldclass designers, she is tasked with continually adapting to their distinct clients' brands and helping evolve them to the next stage. Coordinating with the technology team on a daily basis, Danielle brings the experience of working with literally, hundreds of brands, both new and well-established. Takata-Herring was the recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Alumna Award by Cal Poly Pomona's College of Environmental Design and was recently named one of the world's most influential graphic designers thanks to the breadth and caliber of her work with some of the largest global brands. Danielle graduated in 2001 from Cal Poly Pomona in Graphic Design. She enjoys her time volunteering with Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, being on the Dean’s Advisory Council for College of ENV and spending time with her two kids and husband.
Juror’s Criteria:
It has been such an honor to be one of the jurors for this year’s “2D3D+ Student Exhibition”. After reviewing the collective work that is coming out of this college, I continue to be so proud to call myself an alum. When evaluating the artwork, I considered factors such as technical skill and craftmanship, the level of creativity and originality of the concept and execution, the effectiveness of storytelling, the overall aesthetic appeal, and the ability to evoke an emotion.
Betsy Lohrer Hall, Juror Fine Arts Professional, Artist & Educator
Long Beach-based visual artist and educator Betsy Lohrer Hall was born in New York and grew up in Southern California. Her early training was traditional, based in realism. Most of her current work is process-oriented and abstract, ranging from mixed media works on paper to installations and performances. She earned her BA in studio art from Colorado College and her MFA from California State University, Fullerton. She studied art and literature in London and Florence, and painting, briefly, at Parsons, New York City. She has been exhibiting her art for nearly 30 years, with shows in the U.S., in Thailand, and Taiwan. Hall has been teaching art and art history at the college-level for over 18 years. In her art and life, she considers our relationships to nature and to each other—our connections, our impacts, and our potential for healing. As an extension of her art practice, she opened Flux Art Space in 2018. Flux encourages cross-cultural and cross-generational dialogue and connects emerging and midcareer artists with each other and with members of the vibrant communities of Southern California through exhibitions, workshops, and gatherings.
Juror’s Criteria:
Serving on an art jury is a fascinating process. I’m human, so my first impressions are inevitably informed by my own preferences. As a juror, though, I aim to go beyond this. I look closely and consider the art projects on their own merits. I listen to the expertise of the other jurors. I think about how the selected works will relate to each other and fit within the parameters of the show. The jurors work individually, and then together. Over time, a kind of alchemy happens, and the show emerges. Beautiful, smart, sophisticated…silly, revealing, intense…handmade or high-tech or some hybrid of the two: in reviewing this year’s entries, I’m impressed by the variety of approaches to art making. The submissions represent a range of techniques and themes. Many of the works are quite professional, requiring dedication and great skill to make. Poly-Kroma is a celebration of these creative students and their hard work. Congratulations to all the selected participants! As part of the jury process, some of the artists whose works I considered strong or promising were left out of the final selections. I say this not to devalue the selected works in any way. Rather, as a visual artist myself, I know what it feels like when my work is not picked for a show or an award; it can be discouraging. But I keep going and growing. It helps me to remember that there will be many other opportunities. Whether your work is included in this exhibition or not: if being creative brings you joy, keep doing it! See where it leads you.
Jared Boyle, Juror Graphic Design Industry Professional & CPP Alumnus
Jared Boyle is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Long Beach, CA. After graduating from Cal Poly Pomona with a BFA in Graphic Design in 2017, he began his design career at an automotive agency in Long Beach. For the past 6 years, he has claimed multiple Bronze Los Angeles Addy Awards for his agency work. Currently, he resides in the safety of his home employed as a Senior Designer for an agency called Mad Designs based in Venice Beach working on a myriad of brands and companies —some of the most recent being Billabong, Mad Decent (Dillon Francis), and Whipshots (Cardi B)— and projects ranging from branding to motion graphics. He also spends much of his time drawing via traditional media, more specifically pen and ink, and has aspirations of becoming a self-sufficient, full-time, professional doodler.
Juror’s Criteria:
It was an honor to be able to come back to Cal Poly, more specifically the Kellogg University Art Gallery, to be a juror for this year’s student work. The process overall was very smooth, even with the large number of submissions. The organization of the works made the first round of judging a breeze and continued into the second, in-person, round of judging. It was highly beneficial being able to come in and seeing the works in person as well, which made the decision process much more thorough and exciting. It was interesting to see how some decisions altered over the course of the judging process based on the presentation of the works in person, rather than just an image on a screen, ultimately highlighting the importance of the students’ delivery of their projects and/or works and how drastically it may or may not affect the quality of their work and how it may be interpreted. Once again, it was a joy to be able to come back in-person to critique these works and see the consistent improvement of the Art Department students.

SUBMISSION ENTRY LIMITS:
No more than 3 entries per student.
ENTRIES WITH MULTIPLE PARTS count as 1 entry. For example, VCD/Graphic Design packaging designs, branding campaigns, poster series and gameboard designs with multiple parts each count as 1 submission. Fine Art diptychs, triptychs or polyptychs, ceramic or mixed media items that are a set, pair, or grouping of inter-related pieces, etc. are also acceptable and counted as 1 submission. BEWARE that if 1 OR MORE components of a series, packaging, set, grouping, or branding campaign are unacceptable to the jurors, the ENTIRE entry may be rejected.
ENTRIES MUST HAVE BEEN COMPLETED WITHIN THE LAST YEAR. Artwork must have been created in the coursework of Art Dept classes anytime from March 2022 through to the present. This is an annual show and is intended to reflect the art student's work over the last year.
ENTRIES MUST BE PART OF ART DEPARTMENT CLASS COURSEWORK. The call for artwork is open to all Cal Poly Pomona Art Dept. Majors and students who have completed the submitted artwork in Art classes through the Art Dept. The show is required to demonstrate the work done as part of Art Department classes. As a result, instructor signature verification will be required for each entry. No extra-curricular, outside-of-Art-Dept-coursework may be entered as part of this departmental show.
DIGITAL SUBMISSION ENTRY FORMATS
FOR ALL DIGITAL ARTWORK ENTRIES, including 2D, 3D, 4D & 5D ARTWORKS please provide the following:
A well-taken, good-quality, lo-res thumbnail photograph of the artwork, the way it is intended to be viewed, frontally (not angled view). Insert image thumbnail as required into the TOP RIGHT IMAGE BOX in SECTION 1 of your Submission Form for each entry form submitted;

2D ARTWORK will be required to be framed or mounted properly, with hanging devices readily provided if selected. Please prepare work accordingly.
Highly Recommended: 3D ARTWORKS that require 2-3 alternate (front, back, or 3⁄4) views may be combined into one image (binary or trinary image) and inserted into the LARGE BOX in SECTION 4, on page 2, of your Submission Form.
The SECTION 4 image provided, as placed on page 2 of the Submission Form, will be the image viewed by the jurors for determination of whether the work will be exhibited or not. Please make sure to represent your work and yourself well.
