Poly-Kroma 2022, celebrating the Fine Arts and Visual Communication Design work by Cal Poly Pomona students with a virtual "2d3d+ Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition", and virtual "Industry Portfolio Showcase" — featuring the Class of 2022 Visual Communication Design majors' senior portfolios. Join us for our on-site exhibition on Thursday, April 28 - Sunday, May 22, 2022!
Poly-Kroma consists of two distinct shows that celebrate Visual Communication Design and Fine Art directly resulting from coursework completed within the Art Department. The two components of Poly-Kroma include: the Industry Portfolio Showcase—also known as the graduating senior Visual Communication Design majors exhibition; and the 2D3D+ Juried Student Art Show—the annual Art Department’s student exhibition.
Industry Day functions as a capstone experience for the Visual Communication Design major, and serves to present the work of seniors to the professional and surrounding community. This year, the Industry Portfolio Showcase is exhibited in the Back Gallery of the Kellogg University Art Gallery, while the 2D3D+ exhibition is located in the two Front Galleries (East and West) and the Corridor Gallery in the center of the space. The 2D3D+ Juried Show is a competition-based exhibition, juried by industry professionals, and displays the work of students in the Bachelor of Fine Art program, featuring fine art and graphic and visual communication design work by students at all academic levels.
The Industry Portfolio Showcase for 2022 presents senior graphic design portfolios and collateral material from the Professional Practices in Visual Communication Design course. The portfolios include selected work from the totality of the student’s experience at Cal Poly Pomona. The resulting exhibition is a team effort that represents progressive accomplishments achieved throughout the curriculum.
Industry Day, this year, is celebrated on April 30, 2022, 12-4pm and is an event open to all industry professionals that are looking to recruit recent graduates of Visual Communication Design, and an opportunity for seniors to showcase their portfolios of work to prospective employers.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the closure of campus galleries for social distancing purposes, the previous two years (2020 and 2021) were conducted virtually with website-based, on-line digital experiences, and interactive virtual exhibitions to feature both the Industry Portfolio Showcase—the senior Visual Communication Design exhibition; and the 2D3D+ Juried Student Art Exhibition as part of Poly-Kroma for both of these “pandemic years”. As a result this year, we are proud to feature both previous year’s virtual exhibitions within the gallery space as a celebration of Poly-Kroma’s return to campus for this on-site exhibition.
Please join the Art Department, College of Environmental Design, and University Art Galleries in celebrating all three years of students’ artwork through our Fine Art and Visual Communication Design events!

The Jurors
This year’s 2D3D+ Juried Art Exhibition features Fine Art and Visual Communication Design by students at all academic levels. It is a juried competitive exhibition where students are awarded monetary scholarship prizes. This year’s exhibition was juried by: Fine Artist, Mariona Barkus; Class of 2019 Alumnus and Visual Communications Designer major, Aaron Avila; and Visual Communications Design Professional, Venessa Baez-Jones.
About Visual Communications Design Juror: Venessa Baez-Jones
Venessa Baez-Jones is a designer, writer, and content creator who is passionate about using her design powers for good and being of service to society by creating things that help others engage their creative curiosity and learn new things. She also believes compassion and balance are the keys to a more human future and personal growth. Baez-Jones has worked in a variety of fields, including finance, eCommerce, and cosmetics. She currently works as a Senior Graphic Designer at UCLA, working on ad campaigns to encourage safe driving and biking on campus, promote sustainable transportation, and more. Venessa is also the president emeritus of AIGA Tampa Bay and currently serves as secretary for AIGA Los Angeles. You can also find her creating classes on Skillshare, or learning martial arts.
Juror’s Criteria: When reviewing the submissions, I aimed to assess the art beyond my own taste. Clarity of theme, message, or story played a role. Works that used similar techniques and subjects were compared to each other for technical strength. Typography and legibility were important when assessing how a piece was presented. When narrowing down the selections, I made a goal to include a variety of different media.
About Fine Artist Juror: Mariona Barkus
Originally from Illinois, Mariona Barkus moved to California in1970. Her work reflects values and humor honed by her Midwest childhood experiences, which she characterizes as redemption through optimism in the face of adversity. Barkus has shown her work in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States as well as internationally in Ireland, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, and Spain. Her work is in the collections of the Yale University Art Museum, Getty Research Institute, Art Institute of Chicago, Franklin Furnace Collection at the Museum of Modern Art, Special Collections at the Whitney Museum of Art, Center for the Study of Political Graphics, Long Beach Museum of Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Lucy Lippard Collection at the New Mexico Museum of Art, UCLA, Indiana-Purdue University, among many others.
Barkus’ artwork has been reviewed in numerous catalogues and periodicals including, among others, The Los Angeles Times and Artweek. Some of the books featuring her work are Crossing Over: Feminism and Art of Social Concern by Arlene Raven; Other Visions, Other Voices by Paul Von Blum with a forward by Lucy Lippard; Artists’ Books: A Critical Anthology and Sourcebook by The Visual Studies Workshop; From Site to Vision: the Woman’s Building in Contemporary Culture, edited by Sondra Hale and Terry Wolverton, and most recently, from the University of California Press: American Artists Against War 1935—2010 by David McCarthy. She has also received grants from the City of Los Angeles, Women’s Studio Workshop, and New York State Arts Council.
Juror’s Criteria: Let me begin by saying how impressed I was by these talented artists! The main criteria I found myself using throughout my jurying process: engagement — was my eye attracted to the image and did I want to know more, speculate on the meanings enfolded therein? Also important was the overall composition, the clear impact from the work, and a sense of focus — to see that the artist was trying to say something in particular, and how successful they were conveying that message. Imagination, humor, or wit were important elements that determined my choices at times as well. At other times, the artist’s sheer ingenuity was the key. Sharp graphic elements spoke to me while other works tapped into a certain sweet innocence, with, or without, an edge.
About Visual Communications Design “Class of 2019” Alumnus Juror: Aaron Avila
Aaron Avila graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in December of 2020 with a Bachelor’s in Visual Communication Design. Since then, he has always wanted to find a way to give back to the awesome art program that he learned so much from. During his time at CPP, he grew not only as an artist, but also as an individual thanks to the candidness, rigor, and motivation of his professors. So, when the opportunity arose, he jumped at the chance to be a juror for the 2D3D Show (now known as 2d3d+), in which his own work was awarded.
“Personally, I believe art has a way of revealing absolute truth. Whether that truth is personal, cultural, or even spiritual. Because art is innately human, it is one of the many things we all share as a species, but also one we fail to fully take advantage of. Learning the mechanics of visual design taught me how to balance the logos of functional purpose with the pathos of artistic expression; everything coming together to create art with a clearer purpose. It’s a dynamic I’m still learning to figure out. Important, and in addition, art is also the silly doodles you make on the back of bar napkins that make all your friends laugh —and I think that’s pretty cool too!”
Juror’s Criteria: My selections were based on a few criteria: concept, creativity, and execution. I am privy to projects that break normal artistic conventions and force the viewer to confront difficult contrasts, or ideas. As a designer, I also take into account the intended function of the piece, and how well the piece executes that function. Even if a piece doesn't score highly in creativity, I can still be persuaded with a coherent and disciplined presentation. Overall, I carefully selected pieces that demonstrated a powerful mixture of creative expression and knowledgeable adherence to artistic principles.
Exhibited Artworks
The 2022 2D3D+ Juried Art Exhibition features art and visual communication design work by Art Department students at all grade levels. This show, which began in the mid-1970s under the leadership of Professor Diane Divelbess, first took place inside the Cal Poly Pomona University Library just across the way from the Kellogg University Art Gallery, where it moved to in the early 1990s. The show, then called the Student Art Show, and later, 2d3d, was originally started to showcase artwork produced by Cal Poly Pomona’s students in the newly established Art Department. Displays of two-dimensional artforms such as painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, poster design, and book-making; three-dimensional arts such as pottery, ceramics, sculpture, assemblage, and installation art were the earlier artforms presented. As time and technology has evolved, more diverse and emerging artforms such as time-based media, digital and technical illustration, motion graphics, video, gamming and animation have become integral to the arts and creative processes at Cal Poly Pomona, and its forward-thinking Art Department. As this exhibition and its displayed artforms grow and bound forward, it continues to delight the University campus community, as it has over five decades.
After digitally reviewing 113 submissions with over 179 component parts by 58 students, each juror deliberated at length to make the 50 selections of artworks exhibited here. On first viewing, jurors focused on the “stand-outs” and artworks with most originality. On the subsequent rounds, they considered concept and craft. Overall, jurors considered craftsmanship and presentation, skill in technical use of media, as well as creative execution of content and concept. After making their final selections, the jurors honed-in on those pieces they suggested granting top prizes to: special images and objects that also contain unique qualities that set them apart from the rest. From there, jurors unanimously nominated First, Second, Third Place, and Honorable Mention Awards in the Fine Art and Visual Communication Design categories which were announced on April 28, 2022 during our Opening Event and 2d3d+ Award Ceremony.
