The 'book as vessel' inspires beautiful metaphor - a craft for traveling, a container, a holder, a receiver, a transporter. Across time and culture, the vessel is at the center of many ceremonies and rites of passage. Native American cultures have regarded the vessel as a portal to a sacred realm. The book as craft is the book worker's vessel to sail the high seas, to hold our dearest memories, and to indicate the pulse of life. The Guild of Book Workers' 2015-2017 exhibition prompted entrants to interpret the term 'vessel' as broadly or as narrowly as they wished. This exhibition will feature 43 works and will travel across the U.S. from October 2015 through March 2017. Opened in October of 2015, the Vessel exhibition is traveling to six venues across the U.S., incl. Cal Poly Pomona's Kellogg University Art Gallery, and then to other museums, book arts centers, and public and university libraries. The Vessel Exhibition honors the legacy of the book workers' craft and celebrates some of the finest examples of book arts today. At a time when the masses are considering the materiality of the book and its presence or absence as a physical object, it is exciting to showcase the many hand-crafts of the book form. The work presented in the Vessel Exhibition is a vibrant and dynamic collection of Artists' Books, Fine Bindings, Fine Press Printing, Calligraphy, and Sculptural Book Works that showcases both the history of the Book Worker's craft, as well as contemporary interpretations of the book form.
