Windows 11 Upgrade Required for Faculty and Staff Computers

IT&IP upgrading IT-managed PCs to Windows 11, and faculty and staff are encouraged to self-upgrade their computer at their discretion using the Software Center. All faculty and staff Windows 10 computers began to automatically receive the option to perform Windows 11 upgrades in January 2025.

Project Timeline

  • All new and re-imaged Windows PCs now use Windows 11.
  • All faculty and staff should self-upgrade to Windows 11 using the Software Center. We suggest upgrading from Windows 10 to 11 during quieter times of the workday, after hours, or during the weekend.
  • January 7, 2025: Windows 11 became required for all staff and faculty PCs.
  • Important - April 2025: Faculty and staff PCs running Windows 10 may be prompted to upgrade to Windows 11 during work hours; we advise upgrading before this deadline using the Software Center to prevent work disruptions.
  • Summer 2025: All remaining classrooms and labs will be upgraded to Windows 11.
  • October 2025: Windows 10 reaches end-of-life. All Windows PCs on Windows 11.

The Windows 11 upgrade typically takes 60 to 120 minutes. Although you can continue to work on your computer during the upgrade process, you should minimize usage and save all documents. The process will require at least one reboot, and any open documents may be lost.

Please refer to the Windows 11 Upgrade Website for additional information.

MacOS 15 Sequoia Upgrade Available for Faculty and Staff Computers

Summary: MacOS 15, Sequoia, is available to faculty and staff for IT-managed computers.

What does this mean to me? Users are encouraged to start the upgrade process by launching Software Center and clicking on the Featured or OS Upgrades tab, then selecting MacOS 15 Sequoia. We recommend installing all Software Center upgrades during or before spring break at the best time for your schedule. If you have yet to upgrade by spring break, your computer will become unavailable during the upgrade, likely during work hours.

Upgrading your operating system could take 1-2 hours.

Questions: If you have questions regarding the Mac OS upgrade, contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.

CPP adds additional GenAI Tools with ChatGPT Edu

Monday, March 24, Cal Poly Pomona and The California State University launches OpenAI's generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT Edu, for students; access for faculty and staff is available. Faculty and staff can log in to  ChatGPT using their cpp.edu email or from the Online Services page in MyCPP.

What is ChatGPT Edu?

Similar to Microsoft’s Copilot, ChatGPT Edu is an AI-powered chatbot and personal assistant designed to enhance productivity and simplify day-to-day tasks for higher education institutions. Use ChatGPT to support activities like:

  • Drafting reports, checking grammar, and assisting with communications.
  • Brainstorming ideas and potential solutions.
  • Simplify complex projects and help with documentation.

Cal Poly Pomona's ongoing commitment to providing innovative technology empowers our students, faculty, and staff to optimize how we work and study.

What to Expect with ChatGPT Edu

Account Activation
Monday morning, March 24, students will receive an invitation email in their cpp.edu inbox from noreply@tm.openai.com; this is an invite from OpenAI to join the CPP workspace.

After March 24, you can log-in to ChatGPT using your cpp.edu email or from the Online Services page in MyCPP, at any time, accepting the invitation is optional.

If you do not have an account tied to your cpp.edu email:

  • Accept the invitation to gain access to the ChatGPT Edu workspace.

If you already have a ChatGPT account tied to your cpp.edu email:

  • IT&IP advises you to export and back up your conversations and any Custom GPTs before joining the Edu workspace.
  • Next week, faculty, staff, and students will receive an email invitation to join the Edu workspace. After accepting the invitation, you will be guided to migrate your conversations and Custom GPTs to the new Edu workspace.
  • If you have a paid subscription tied to your cpp.edu email account, it will be automatically canceled when you join the Edu workspace.
    • Note: CPP Enterprises and ASI employees are not included in this project. Please check with your supervisor about migrating your account.
