Kellogg Honors College Applications

The Kellogg Honors College admits students via three different entry points: incoming first year freshmen, current Cal Poly Pomona freshmen completing their first year, and incoming transfers.

Courses

Honors courses at Cal Poly Pomona are special sections of general education courses taught by specialized faculty limited to a maximum enrollment of 20 honors students. This combination creates a learning environment that allows students to delve deeper into course content, promotes pedagogical innovation, and curricular enrichment.

Facts About Honors Courses At Cal Poly Pomona

• Honors courses take the place of standard Cal Poly Pomona general education courses
• Honors students must meet the same curriculum unit requirements as non-Honors students (no additional courses required)
• Grades for Honors courses are not weighted
• Priority Registration is available to Honors students who enroll in at least one Honors course for a given academic term
• The minimum required amount of Honors courses varies according to when a student is admitted to the Kellogg Honors College

All Kellogg Honors College students must complete an Engaged Learning Experience by their final year at Cal Poly Pomona. This is an opportunity for Honors students to showcase their research interests and abilities to the campus community. The Engaged Learning Experience (ELE) is completed as an Honors course and is included in the required number of Honors courses. Every spring KHC students present their ELE projects at the Research, Scholarly & Creative Activities conference and their accomplishments are further highlighted at our annual Convocation. Abstracts from previous Engaged Learning Experience projects are available at the Current Students page.

Civic Engagement (CE) is the Kellogg Honors College’s (KHC) name for community service. CE is an opportunity to build relationships with fellow KHC students while gaining exposure to issues concerning the community. CE events are scheduled by the KHC, so students do not need to find community service projects on their own. Events are listed online where students can sign-up to attend. A credit system is used rather than counting individual community service hours. Students are required to complete the equivalent of 10 hours of CE every year. The benefits of Civic Engagement include:

• Developing awareness of issues concerning the community
• Building relationships with other KHC students
• Applying classroom knowledge to real world situations
• Greater involvement with a club or organization (on and off campus)
• Developing insights for scholarship and graduate school applications
