Equity Minded Classroom Pedagogy
The poster session presented by Sally Najera Romero and Pual Hottinger representing the Cal Poly Pomona research librarians highlighted their evolved pedagogy and curriculum through the implementation and use of the campus-wide Fearless Classroom model beginning spring 2021 in their LIB 1500: Information Literacy for the Digital Age, a 3-unit General Education course.
Through the model, the presenters structured their class to gain the trust of the students and foster a brave space with respect, acceptance, and acknowledgment of their own lived experiences and realities.
In addition, Najera Romero and Hottinger strived to empathize with all their students and recognize that everyone is different and brings a variety of attributes to the classroom environment. Through compassion, they focused on implementing early intervention with their students to achieve academic success.
The poster session included information on the Cal Poly Pomona Fearless Classroom Model, what was adopted from the model into their pedagogy and curriculum, their successes, and challenges with implementing the model in their classroom, how they intentionally provided anti-racist content and material in the pedagogy and curriculum and how feedback and reflection is used and take personal responsibility in their approaches in future courses and research.
