Fearless Classroom

A Fearless Classroom is an intentional approach that enables student academic performance, engagement in the classroom, and commitment to their education from a psychologically safe classroom community that is inclusive and equitable where there is mutual trust and respect between the instructor and the students, among the students, and where the instructor demonstrates empathy, compassion, and humility toward the students.


As of 2024, 92% of students agreed their instructor created a comfortable (fearless) learning environment that supported their ability to succeed in the course (n=8,503).

The Fearless Classroom conceptual module presents attributes on the left side of the triangle that create a psychologically safe (fearless) learning environment for students that enable student academic performance, commitment to their education and path to graduation. The right side of the triangle represents attributes that create fear that can impede student academic performance, commitment to their education, and path to graduation. The white space at the top of the triangle represents barriers to a fearless classroom environment. The animation illustrates how increasing the fearless attributes drive out the fearful attributes creating a fearless classroom.
