Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP)

The Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP) is a program which provides eligible, tenured retired faculty members an opportunity to continue teaching for a maximum of five consecutive years at a time base of fifty percent (50%) post-retirement CSU employment. FERP Benefits

Medical benefits are covered from your monthly CalPERS retirement check.

Beginning of FERP

During the duration of the FERP appointment, the dental plan will continue in one of the following Enhanced Level plans depending on which plan you were enrolled in prior to retiring.
  • Delta Dental Enhanced II PPO
  • Delta Care – USA Enhanced HMO
The CSU pays 100% of the monthly cost for the Enhanced Level plan during the duration of FERP for retirees and their eligible dependents.
  • The Enhanced plan is an 80% coverage with preventative care at no cost.

Ending of FERP

At the end of FERP, you can choose from one of the following dental plans you would like to continue with into retirement.

  • Delta Dental Basic PPO
  • Delta Dental Enhanced II PPO
  • Delta Care – USA Basic HMO
  • Delta Care – USA Enhanced HMO
The CSU pays 100% of the monthly cost for the Basic Plan and the Enhanced Plan has a monthly premium for all retirees and their eligible dependents.
  • The Basic plan coverage is 75% coverage for all services
  • The Enhanced plan is an 80% coverage with preventative care at no cost.

Beginning of FERP

During the duration of the FERP appointment, vision will continue in the Basic plan.
The CSU pays 100% of the monthly cost for the Basic plan during the duration of FERP for retirees and their eligible dependents.

  • Vision is paid once a year for 12 months.
  • It renews at the beginning of each semester that a FERP is teaching.

Ending of FERP

At the end of FERP, vision does not automatically continue into retirement. Vision is a voluntary benefit. To continue in one of the following visions plans, complete a VSP Retiree Vision Enrollment Form (PDF) and send directly to VSP.

  • Vision Basic Plan
  • Vision Premier Plan
The CSU does not pay for the Basic Plan or Premier Plan. Each plan has a monthly premium for all retirees and their eligible dependents.
  • The Basic plan has a lower allowance - $110 frame allowance
  • The Premier plan has a higher allowance - $210 frame allowance
