STUDIO/LAB ACCESS AND HOURS OF OPERATION

The Printmaking Studio at the Department of Art is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. for students enrolled for the current term. 

Entry to the Printmaking Studio is available afterhours by calling Campus Police at the non-emergency number and presenting a K-Pass. The Instructor will issue K-Passes to allow students 24 access to Labs and Studios where appropriate.

  • STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEANING THEIR WORKSPACE AND COMMUNAL AREAS. IF YOU FIND A COMMUNAL AREA HAS NOT BEEN CLEANED THE STUDENT USING THE AREA MUST CLEAN THE AREA. THIS IS VITAL FOR THE SAFETY OF THE LAB. PLEASE INFORM THE INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELY AND THE ISSUE WILL BE ADDRESSED.
  • Solvent RAGS must be place in respective RED CONTAINERS immediately after use.
  • Spills must be cleaned up immediately and materials discarded properly.
  • In addition to maintaining personal workspaces, Monitor duties are assigned to all students. Monitor duties are posted on the bulletin board weekly. It is the student's responsibility to check the list each week. If you will be absent, you must find someone to cover your duties.
  • Food and drink are not allowed in the Printmaking Studio. It is unsafe to eat food while handling hazardous materials.
  • All aisles and doorways are to remain clear. The door to the Printmaking Studio must never be propped open.
  • Only Students enrolled in Printmaking are allowed in the Printmaking Studio
  • Personal belongings must be stored in your locker or under your table
  • The last person to leave the studio is responsible for turning off the exhaust fan, closing the solvent wash out box, and turning off the lights.

  • First aid kits are located in the studio above the front sink and acid room sink. If you use the supplies in the kit please notify a staff member so that it can be restocked.
  • Eye wash is located in the Acid Room to the right of the sink. If you become aware of any malfunction notify the Instructor, or Office Staff immediately.
  • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are kept in a binder by the front sink. Read the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the hazardous materials that you use.
  • It is the responsibility of each student to provide their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while working in the studio/lab. PPE may include, but not limited to eye protection, gloves, long sleeve clothing, closed shoes, respirators, etc. It is also the responsibility of each student to keep their PPE in good condition and to wear such equipment wherever and whenever appropriate.

  • Students may not under any circumstances etch plates in the acid room until they have completed safety training conducted by the Instructor. Students must have a signed certificate from the Instructor verifying safety training has been successfully completed.
  • The exhaust fan must be turned on at all times when ink, solvents, oil based grounds, the hot plate, or acid room cabinet are in use.
  • Spray products, including spray mounts, spray paint and other aerosols cannot be used indoors.
  • Chemicals being used in the lab must be in the manufacturer’s container, with an accurate label and an SDS must be on file.
  • The material must be stored in the appropriate storage locker designated for the type of material and returned to the cabinet after use.
  • If there is hazardous waste material, a manifest form must be completed. Environmental Health and Safety disposal procedures followed. Call EH&S at x4697 for more information.
  • Nitric and Ferric acid can only be used in the Acid Room. these solutions are maintained by the Instructor or certified student workers. Under no circumstances will a student attempt to mix acids or “spike acid baths” to adjust strength of Acid BAths.
  • The exhaust fan must be used at all times when the door to the acid cabinet is open. Acid trays must recovered as soon as students are have finished etching their plates.
  • If Acid is spilled inside the cabinet or on the floor, immediately pour baking soda on the spill. Baking Soda is located on the counter directly next to the acid cabinet. Baking Soda will immediately neutralize Nitric Acid.
  • If some acid gets on your hands or other exposed areas, calmly go to the sink and wash your hands with soap and water. The Nitric acids are diluted with water and are less than 10% of the solution. They are extremely diluted, and will not cause serious or permanent damage to your skin. You must wash your hands immediately or skin irritation will occur. Immediately inform the Instructor if you spill acid or get it on your skin.
  • Print studio tables, inking stations, presses and general work areas are to be cleaned and degreased with vinegar or Simple Green at the end of each class/session.
  • No inks or solvent may be stored in users assigned print drawers or cabinets.
  • Users must notify Shop Manager of any personal physical or health limitation that could hinder or affect their usage of the printmaking equipment or facilities.

  • If you see something, say something. Report any and all safety concerns including but not limited to: equipment malfunctions, missing guards, improper use of equipment, hazardous material spills, etc., promptly to the Instructor or staff members.
  • Report all injuries and/or near miss incidents to to the Instructor or staff members.
  • Reporting of safety concerns can also be made anonymously to the Environmental Health & Safety Office.
