Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship Program 2017: Fremont Peak Observatory

This project for the charette stage of the 2017 Cavin Fellowship will be to design or re-design the existing Fremont Peak Observatory complex in a way which will preserve its educational and research missions while expanding its capacity. The facility currently hosts about 2,000 people a year. The Fremont Peak Observatory Association is hoping to use the attention created by a new building and updated facilities to triple this number in the next 5 years
Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship Program 2016: UCLA Marina Aquatic Center and UCLA Rowing Boathouse

Competitiors are to propose a building or complex of buildings that will house both UCLA Rowing Team’s new boathouse and its slipways and a new home for UCLA’s Marina Aquatic Center on its current 18,500 square-foot (sqft) site at the base of the jetty that separates Marina Del Rey and Ballona Creek. The goal is to create a more suitable home for UCLA’s athletes and to create a higher profile for UCLA rowing and its recreational water sports programs. The project will expand the current facilities by nearly doublingthe size of the current facility from 5,500 sqft. to 11,100 sqft.

Design proposal for the New Santa Clara County Recycling Center. Seven miles from the center of Downtown San Jose, California lies Hellyer Park, one of 28 parks in the Santa Clara County Parks system and it is home to several activities that support cycling and cyclists in the Silicon Valley. The design brief for this year’s Cavin Traveling Fellowship Competition will focus on the confluence of these specific types of cyclists around the Hellyer Velodrome.

Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship Program 2013: Mount Lowe Preservation Center & Museum

The hypothetical project proposes a new Center for the Mount Lowe Preservation Society in the Southern California City of Altadena. The Mount Lowe Preservation Center seeks to establish a permanent museum to display, educate, and further preserve the landmarks and artifacts of the Mount Lowe Railway and its founder, Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe. The Mount Lowe Preservation Center aims to restore and preserve the National Registered Historic Scenic Mountain Railway. The Center seeks a net-zero sustainable design to house rare artifacts, including the Great Incline Car and the 1893 Colombian Exposition Search Light.
Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship Program 2012: Chica Wetlands Visitors Center

The Wetlands Center is a hypothetical project that is proposed for the purposes of the 2012 Cavin Fellowship. This is not a real project and contestants may not contact city, local or state agencies for information or other residents that may have knowledge or interest in the wetlands. The new visitor’s center will provide a recognized identity and guest services to the community furthering the mission of habitat restoration and sustainable building practices. The design of the new visitor’s center must stay within the site boundary to be no more than 300' from the existing bridge improvements to minimize impact.
Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship Program 2011: Sustainable Food Center

This project is a hypothetical project located in Southern California City of Whittier. The project is located at the intersection of Bright Street and Philadelphia Street. The site is currently a city owned parking lot but was previously the site of a variety of buildings prior to the 1986 Whittier earthquake that destroyed many buildings throughout the downtown district. Some of the open sites have been restored but many remain as unoccupied lots. The site is surrounded by commercial properties that populate the Uptown District of Whittier.
