2024 Cavin Fellowship Scholar: William Smith
William Smith, University of Oregon, Class of 2013, wins the 2024 Cavin Traveling Fellowship.
The 2024 Recipient of the Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship is William Smith.
The Competition’s prize this year was $50,000.00 to conduct travel and independent research on a topic of the recipient’s choice. William’s winning concept, “A Building for Two Futures” was commended by the jury for both its clear concept and its impressive representation. William is from Dallas, Oregon. He received his master in architecture degree with distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and his bachelor of architecture degree from the University of Oregon. He has been a guest critic at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Cornell University, Madrid IE School of Architecture, Wentworth Institute of Technology, University of Miami, California College of the Arts, and the University of Oregon. He plans on traveling to Mexico, Europe, and Japan on his tour.
This year’s competition asked candidates to design a new multipurpose facility for The
Mono Lake Water Conservation Center - providing spaces to grow and continue to facilitate their research and educational programming. Proposals included general exhibit space for water conservation awareness, laboratories for scientific use, and educational spaces such as classrooms, along with a series of outdoor infrastructure to support active engagement with the landscape and ecology of the lake. Of the 21 entries for the competition five finalists were chosen:
Ben Feicht (UO), Austin Richards (CPPARC), William Smith (UO), Marco Zhou (CPPARC), and James Cardona (CPPARC). The runner up for the competition from this group was Marco Zhou

Aaron Cayer is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona, where his teaching and research focus on architecture firms, labor, and political economy. He received his Ph.D. in Architecture History from UCLA as well as undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture from Norwich University in Vermont. Prior to Cal Poly Pomona, he was an Assistant Professor of Architecture History at the University of New Mexico, from 2018-2023.
Javiera Sequeira is a registered architect and has a background in managing complex, mixed-use projects. She has been involved in a wide range of projects while at Omgivning including adaptive reuse, tenant improvements, offices, and hospitality projects. She is a highly motivated and enthusiastic leader known for cultivating exceptional relationships with cross-functional teams from clients, designers, contractors, and vendors.As a Design Lead, Javiera believes in a holistic architecture-interior design approach, allowing the architecture to influence the interior design and the interior design to enhance the architecture.
David Nunes Solomon is a designer and educator based in Los Angeles. He is the founder of ododo– an architecture and research office. Prior to starting his own practice, he worked for Herzog & de Meuron in Switzerland where he was the project manager for SongEun Art Space in Seoul, Korea.
His writing and research have been published in journals including Arquine, Places, PLAT, and Manifest. He is currently working on a series of exhibitions and publications entitled Building Pedagogy that will comprise a global survey of purpose-built architecture schools.
David received his Bachelor of Arts in Earth Science from Columbia University and his Master of Architecture with Distinction from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design where he was the 2019 recipient of the Julia Amory Appleton Fellowship.
