PTLs will normally be reviewed annually to assess their teaching performance. PTLs will provide student evaluations for all courses taught which will be placed in their Personnel Action Files (PAFs). Two tenured faculty members, knowledgeable in the course being taught, will be chosen to visit the class of each PTL once each year for a peer evaluation of teaching performance. A standard evaluation form will be used for this purpose. The evaluations will be placed in the PTL PAF. The Department Chair will document any information which he/she has received regarding the teaching performance of any PTL. This documentation will be placed in the PTL PAF. All materials placed in a PTL PAF during the evaluation process will be available for review by the PTL and he/she will be given the opportunity to respond in writing.
A subcommittee of five members elected by the full RTP committee will examine the PAF of each PTL after his/her first quarter of teaching and thereafter at the beginning of every Spring Quarter and make a presentation to the full RTP committee based on their findings. The full RTP committee will then vote to recommend one of the following three actions to the Department Chair:
- Retain the PTL.
- Retain the PTL with counseling.
- Dismiss the PTL.
If counseling of the PTL is required it will be done by the Department Chair. The purpose of the counseling is to advise the PTL of deficiencies and/or problems with his/her teaching, to recommend steps which can be taken to improve it, and to warn of consequences should improvements not be made.
FULL TIME LECTURERS (FTLs)
The evaluation of FTLs will be the same as that of PTLs with the addition that FTLs will be asked to provide a summary of their service to the Department, College and University which will be considered in their evaluation in addition to their teaching performance.
