CBA Students Help Sow the Seeds

A team of seven incredibly dedicated College of Business Administration (CBA) students in the Social Impact and Nonprofit Marketing course at Cal Poly Pomona recently partnered with Sowing the Seeds for Life foodbank to develop community resources for the school’s surrounding area.

The students seized this experiential service-learning opportunity to help define basic needs and inequities while breaking down stereotypes of who uses food resources and destigmatizing the need for support. To fully grasp these concepts requires a significant amount of unlearning and tremendous empathy, and the Cal Poly Pomona students really stepped up for the project.

The students regularly confronted unpopular opinions, plus shifts in their own perceptions and actions, while seeking to change behaviors and attitudes within their communities. They also raised nearly $5,000 for Sowing Seeds for Life food bank and pantry. The sum of $5k equates to 20,000 lbs. of food which helps feed over 13000 people within Pomona and its surrounding cities.

“You have made a profound difference in the lives of others, including mine,” acknowledges faculty member and organizer Lydia Chen Shah, interim director of the Center for Community Engagement at Cal Poly Pomona.

A special note of appreciation to Jaime Gomez Velasquez, Vanessa Miranda, Nikita Luhar, Andrew Segura, Jacquelin Perez, Nita Prak, and Matthew Schmidt.

Hats off to these CBA students for truly sowing the seeds to build a better community together!
