Robert's Story
Tell us about yourself
My name is Robert Solorio, I am currently a masters student in the MSIS program here at Cal Poly. I completed my undergraduate studies at Cal State LA in computer information systems which was a great experience that aided in starting my career in cyber security. I wanted to become more technically-oriented in my career, so when I decided to go after my masters I saw that CPP’s program was very technical and therefore fit my needs perfectly. I currently work as an IT Security Engineer for a well-known space and technology organization where I serve as the first line of defense in protecting against malicious activity. During my free time, I try to contribute to community and professional organizations when I can.
What interests and excites you about business?
The thing that excites me about business is that you can approach a business like a game: when the business faces problems, it takes knowledge, creativity, and some luck to come up with a solution that will, not only resolve the problem, but add to the business in a positive way as well.
Tell us about your experience in the MSIS program.
Being a part of the MSIS program has changed my life for the better. The professors that we have had the opportunity to learn from challenged us with complex concepts and helped us grow in many different aspects. The classes that I enjoyed the most were the cyber law and computer forensic courses.
What strengths/skills have you gained from the program and taken back to work?
One skill that I have gained from this program that has changed my work style has been my ability to efficiently research and present findings. The research papers and projects we have completed in our courses has significantly improved my ability to find useful information and present them in a way that brings value.
What are your future goals?
After graduating from Cal Poly Pomona, I would like to take some time to really focus on my career goals and obtain some professional certificates. During my time here, I successfully obtained a job in my desired industry, so I will continue working on improving myself and studying the latest in technology and business. In the future, I would like to see myself in a position where I can contribute to the growth of those on my team and those who need the extra support.
Do you have any advice for future MSIS students?
You get what you give. If you truly want to make the most of this program, put in the effort to learn from your colleagues and keep an open mind. This has made a world of difference for me, I am graduating happily knowing I took away a lot of knowledge.
