College of Business Showcase of Excellence

Singelyn Center students presented a poster on their research, “Rental Affordability and Tenant Protection Strategies for the City of Pomona” at the 4th Annual College of Business Administration Showcase of Excellence held on May 9, 2023. Students researched both the short term and long term effects of rent stabilization policies in general, and analyzed historical patterns of growth in rental rates in Los Angeles County and the City of Pomona. ArcGIS was used to map variables impacting rental affordability in the City of Pomona. Marvin Alvarado, Andrew Cornejo, Victor Miller, Dat Nguyen, Gialeny Serrano, and Paul Williams are on the student team and Professors Anthony Orlando and Rita Kumar serve as faculty advisors. Andrew Cornejo, Marvin Alvarado, and Professor Anthony Orlando represented the team at the showcase.

WDSI (Western Decision Sciences Institute) Conference Presentation

Dr. Mehrdad Koohikamali led a team of five MSBA students on a Western Decision Science Institute conference presentation in April 2023. The topic of the project is “Detecting fake news: how do governments fool us?”. In this project, team investigated the spread of misinformation and disinformation during the recent 2022 Iran’s national protests. The events following the death of a 22-year-old Iranian girl while in police custody embarked national and international outrage in Iran after September 2022. The role of emotions and sentiment have been investigated. The Twitter data was downloaded with Twitter API v2 and sentiment analysis and emotion analysis were conducted. Results will be expanded and shared in the future.

WDSI (Western Decision Sciences Institute) Conference Presentation

In this research presented at the WDSI conference in April 2023, Dr. Mohammad Salehan and MSBA student, Giang Nguyen, looked at how use of sentiment by mainstream media (MSM) channels on Twitter has evolved over time. The results show that the MSM have learned from the recent research on information diffusion on social media which has led to increased use of sentiment in general, and negative and high-arousal negative sentiment in particular, by them over time. The results confirm that the MSM are actively using sentiment to improve the diffusion of their messages.

MOTM (Meeting of the Minds) Conference Presentation

Students working on a Singelyn Center project with University Advancement presented their research at the Annual Meeting of the Minds Conference 2023 (MOTM 2023) on February 8, 2023. Elissa San Juan, Executive Director of Advancement Services, along with students Paolo Baluyot, Diana Diaz, Sanjay Bharati Kajool, and Giang Nguyen, presented “Engaging Relationships: Engagement and Philanthropic Giving” (with Professors Alireza Yazdani and Rita Kumar serving as faculty advisors). Dr. Anthony Orlando Publishes a Book

About his recent book, “Keeping Races in Their Places: The Dividing Lines That Shaped the American City”, Dr. Orlando says “Redlining has been known to historians and urban planners for decades, but it's only recently that GIS experts have been able to digitize the maps and publish them online for researchers to use. Since then, the quantitative analysis of redlining has exploded. Economists, sociologists, and housing scholars now have a rich understanding of both the causes and effects of this shameful federal policy. In my book, I bring together this wealth of new knowledge and link the data together to tell the story from start to finish, including my own original analysis of the maps, to reveal the underlying forces that have shaped our cities, our neighborhoods, and our lives to this very day. Together, this data-driven story helps us understand where we failed so many residents and how we can build a more just and equitable future."
