“Geospatial Applications for Business: Way More than Cool Maps”
GIS use in Business (2/26/19)
The Center for Innovative Analytics hosted a speaker event on February 26th, 2019. Dr. Mike Reibel, Professor of Geography, delivered an engaging presentation titled “Geospatial Applications for Business: Way More than Cool Maps”. Dr. Reibel gave an overview of value-added decision support methods for businesses using geographic information systems (GIS) and related technologies. He outlined key best practices using GIS for business, including:
- Geodemographic market segmentation
- Retail and service site location
- Transportation and logistics network/supply chain optimization
- Real estate submarket analysis
- Finance (especially HMDA and CRA compliance)
- Sales territory optimization
- Market share analysis and M&A strategy
Dr. Reibel also described existing geospatial analysis resources for teaching and research on the Cal Poly Pomona campus and discussed potential synergies between College of Business faculty work and other faculty expertise at Cal Poly Pomona.
