CAFE Winter Institute
The goal of CAFE Winter Institute 2024 is to invite faculty to consider together what it means and how to offer a course that goes beyond using generally effective strategies to being anti-racist.
CAFE previously offered "Doing the Work” in Summer 2022 and Winter 2023. Whether you participated previously or not, you will gain valuable knowledge from the Winter Institute, as we hope to build on our past sessions as well as introduce new topics. Faculty of any discipline are welcomed and encouraged to participate. We have capacity for a maximum of 30 faculty participants.
Participants may continue in a learning community in Spring 2024.

Format and Schedule
This is a 4-day in-person Institute, to be held on CPP campus. Please plan to be on campus in person Jan. 9 - 12, 2024, 10am to at least 4pm. We will provide an optional loving kindness meditation each day, 4:10 - 4:30pm. Optional one on one feedback and coaching will be available 4:15 to 5pm. In addition to featuring speakers and community discussions, we will allow time for private work on your deliverables.
Outcomes
Foundational knowledge
- Define anti-racist teaching and distinguish anti-racist teaching from inclusive teaching
- Gain several workable, applicable strategies for an anti-racist classroom
- Recognize classroom micro-aggressions
Application
- Plan to implement anti-racist strategies that are appropriate for your class
- Create or modify a signature assignment with anti-racist principles in mind
- Plan to respond to classroom micro-aggressions
Integration
- Articulate how the practices of anti-racist teaching might address unjust structures in the university and in your discipline
Human Dimension
- Identify values in your discipline that support anti-racism and consider how your teaching practice may enact those values
Caring
- With faculty peers, provide and receive collegial feedback that offers thoughtful critique in a caring way, aware of the complex personhood of the recipient
Learning to Learn
- Use Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning Outcomes as a framework to plan your own anti-racist teaching
- Create a private learning plan
Deliverables
Each day of in-person participation will be paid at a rate of $150. It is necessary to submit all deliverables below in order to receive any stipend. For example, if you attend one day and submit all deliverables, that is $150. If you attend all four days but do not submit deliverables, we will not be able to pay the stipends. If you attend all four days and submit deliverables, you will receive $600.
Required
Due during Institute (Day 4):
- First draft or concept of a signature assignment with anti-racist principles. Indicate where in the semester’s schedule you might deploy it.
- Provide the syllabus for the course in which you plan to use the assignment. The syllabus does not need to be revised unless you want to.
- Reflection on how the values of your discipline, its practices and culture, its definition of rigor, and the methods your discipline uses CAN actively center the different experiences, histories, viewpoints, and funds of knowledge of our students…even if, historically, it has not.
Due after Institute (by Jan. 19):
- Reflection on identifying and responding to racial microaggressions in the classroom
- Provide a personal learning plan to continue your work in anti-racist teaching & learning
- Include a plan or appointment to meet with your disciplinary librarian or otherwise locate materials that you can use in your course over the spring
- Complete the Institute evaluation instrument
Note: Attendees should be comfortable with basic aspects of online computer use including web browsing and sending/receiving emails with attachments.
