  I briefly explore a hypothetical perspective on generative AI in the classroom. The hypothesis: generative AI is a threat to pedagogy because it provides students tools that undermine or circumvent the educational goals of the instructor and institution. I argue that the only difference between generative AI and previously available tools is its accessibility. And I conclude that if we should not have adopted an adversarial stance towards our students with respect to old tools, then we have even more reason to not adopt this stance when tools are widely available.

  ChatGPT: Challenges, Biases and Limitations (Presentation Slides)
  Over the past year, ChatGPT has become one of the most prominent example applications for AI. While it presents a very friendly interface, allowing users to just chat with it, this facade can at times mask some of its limitations. In this talk, I will discuss some of the problems that can occur when we, or our students, rely too much on this tool without critically examining its output. While some limitations are clear with even a just cursory inspection of the output, others are more subtle, and require further investigation to be fully unveiled.

How Generative AI Will Shift the Nature of Work for Our Students

Generative AI is a transformational economic force that will shift the nature of work for all our students. I invite you to a dialogue and look forward to sharing these key ideas:

• Generative AI is much larger than ChatGPT and promises to be an integral part of all software. For instance, Microsoft plans to integrate Gen AI into Office 365, computer vision implementation in radiology.
• The role that generative AI plays will run the Blooms taxonomy gamut- from automating routine and dull tasks to providing logical narratives (i.e., executive function).
• Fundamentally, this technology lowers the cost of cognition leading to disruption in knowledge markets due to cost reduction.Since generative AI produces content that appears plausible, the need for domain expertise is greater to discern the shallow word pastiche from expert opinion.
• There will be a massive economic opportunity to help overcome the dark side of generative AI- bias, hallucination and illicit use.
• AI has already modified the world of cybersecurity by reducing the cost of producing fakes, misinformation and viable attacks. This will only accelerate over time.

Sandeep Krishnamurthy, Ph.D. is the inaugural Singelyn Family Dean of the College of Business Administration and Singelyn Graduate School of Business at Cal Poly Pomona. Krishnamurthy is a sought-after published author, speaker, expert witness, and media commentator.
