First Year Experience Course Outcomes and Expectations

Requirements for First-Year Courses

All courses that intend to use Student Success Fee First Year Programming Funds must demonstrate through their Expanded Course Outline that they address the topics listed below and include the indicated requirements, assignments, and activities.

Key Learning Outcomes for First-Year Success

Commitment to Education

Students will demonstrate a commitment to and responsibility for their own education. The class must address academic expectations of the college and university, learning strategies and study skills, and academic planning and advising. The class must include an assignment to create a personal roadmap.

Personal Development

Students will understand the relationship of their education to their personal and professional development. The class must address assessment of skills, interests, and goals with respect to majors, as well as physical, social, and financial wellness. The class must include an activity to explore current or future plans in major.

Collaboration and Engagement

Students will develop the skills to work cooperatively in diverse communities and build a strong support network of faculty, staff, and peers. The class must address the importance of engaging in diverse activities with faculty and students to develop interpersonal skills and create campus connections. The class must include a requirement to participate in one or more co-curricular activities.

Information Literacy

Students will develop information literacy skills to enhance their academic and personal success. The class must address library resources and campus information resources. The class must include a library activity.

Intellectual Inquiry

Students will develop an appreciation of intellectual inquiry. The class must address academic entry-level expectations in the areas of oral and written communications, and critical thinking or problem-solving. The class must include a common read and multiple significant writing assignments that allow students to apply feedback.
