Course Repetition & Grade Forgiveness

What is Course Repetition?

Course Repetition is when you take a course more than once. You can repeat a course with the goal of earning a better grade if you earned a non-passing grade in your previous attempt. All attempts appear on your transcript and are included in your GPA calculation.

What is Grade Forgiveness?

When you earn a better grade the second or third time, you may be eligible for Grade Forgiveness, which allows you to replace the previous grade with the new one. This means that the old grade will be taken out of your GPA, however all attempts will still appear on your transcript

More About Course Repetition and Grade Forgiveness for Undergraduates

You can repeat any course, but only grades of C-, D+, D, D- F, NC, WU or IC may be repeated.

A D- is considered passing. However, a grade of C- or better is required of each Cal Poly Pomona or transfer student completing courses in:

  • Written communication in the English language (GE area A2)
  • Oral communication in the English language (GE area A1)
  • Critical thinking (GE area A3)
  • Mathematics/quantitative reasoning (GE area B4)

You should refer to the University Catalog for any specific grade prerequisites for future courses.

You register for the course in a future term. Review the Student Success Central academic calendar for upcoming registration periods.

You can repeat a course no more than two times for a maximum of three attempts. The number of repeats of individual courses prior to Fall 2009 will contribute to this 2 repetition (3 attempts) limit.

You can submit a Petition to Waive Restrictions on Course Repeats if you want to repeat a class for a fourth attempt. The form is available on the Registrar's Office website

You are limited to 28 units of course repetition.

Grade Forgiveness through course repetition will automatically happen a) when you repeat the course if the new grade is better than the original grade and b) if you have grade forgiveness units to use. You do not need to submit any paperwork.

The Registrar's Office will automatically process it after final grades are posted. You'll be able to check your GPA on your unofficial transcript in your BroncoDirect Student Center. Contact your academic advisor if you have have any questions or see a discrepancy.

You are limited to 16 units of grade forgiveness. This means that you will be able to forgive 16 semester units of courses for which you’ve earned a C- or lower.
