Financial Support for Prospective Math & Science Teachers
MSTI Scholar Award
Funded by the CSU Chancellor’s Office, the Mathematics and Science Teacher Initiative (MSTI) Scholar Award provides Cal Poly students who are interested in becoming a mathematics or science teacher with up to $10,000 ($2,500 per semester). MSTI Scholar Awards are available to those seeking a single subject credential in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics and Foundational Level General Science and who agree to teach in a high-need school district for every year of financial support.
Middle Class Scholarship
The Middle Class Scholarship provides undergraduates and students pursing a teaching credential with a scholarship to attend a California State University (CSU). Students with family income and assets up to $201,000 may be eligible.MSTI STEM Authorization Awards
CEMaST will be selecting candidates to receive $1,000 MSTI STEM Authorization Awards for Cal Poly undergraduate/credential students or multiple/single subject teachers to obtain their Supplementary or Subject Matter Authorizations in Science, Math or Computer Science. Supplementary Authorizations added to a credential require 20 semester units or 10 upper division semester units in coursework in the subject requested to teach departmentalized classes in grades 9 and below. Subject Matter Authorizations added to a credential require 32 semester units to teach introductory or specific courses in math, science or computer sciences. If selected, CEMaST will review your transcripts and recommend courses that are needed to complete the authorization. Note, this is a guide and does not guarantee coursework will be accepted by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
Computer Science Supplementary Authorization
CEMaST and the Computer Science Department are offering FREE tuition for multiple and single subject teachers to obtain their supplementary authorizations in computer science. Tuition will be covered 100% by generous grants from SchoolsFirst FCU and the Math & Science Teacher Initiative (MSTI) fund. Limited spots are available. Check back for more details in May 2022.Golden State Teacher Grant
The Golden State Teacher Grant Program (GSTG) encourages students to consider earning a teaching credential and teach in a high-need field, at a priority school, in California for four years, within five years after completing a teacher preparation program. The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) will award one-time Golden State Teacher Grant funds of up to $20,000 to over 4,400 eligible students across California, that are enrolled in a Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) approved teacher preparation program within a California institution of higher education on or after January 1, 2020. Applicants must agree to all terms and conditions of the GSTG program or be required to repay the grant.
PIE Scholarship
Partners in Education (PIE) Scholarships provide up to $4,000 to Cal Poly students seeking a teaching credential. Future teachers may receive up to $4,000 to help provide financial assistance during their clinical practice.
TEACH Grant
The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program is a non-need-based grant program available for selected post baccalaureate students who are enrolled in an eligible program and who agree to teach in a high-need field, at a low-income elementary or secondary school as a highly qualified teacher for at least four years within eight years of completing the program for which the TEACH Grant is awarded. The TEACH Grant provides a maximum annual amount of $3,728 and $16,000 aggregate.
Pell Grant
The Pell Grant is a federal grant offered to undergraduate students and students enrolled in a post baccalaureate teacher certification program. Grant amounts change yearly and depend on your financial need, cost of attendance, status as a full-time or part-time student and your academic plans.
