Geography

The Polytechnic Approach

Conduct in-depth geospatial analysis in the Geographic Information System lab or head into local habitats and track human impact through field mapping, systematic sampling and preparing environmental impact reports. With a combination of lectures and hands-on experience, you will receive a robust background in geography for graduate training or careers requiring an understanding of peoples, groups, and their cultural and regional institutions.

Courses

The Geography program is designed to provide an understanding of humankind’s cultural and physical environments by examining the dynamic systems through which these diverse settings are changed or sustained. Attention is given to the relationships between population use of resources and environmental and social impacts in rural and urban settings. You may choose any of three subplans: Geographical Studies, Environmental Studies, and Geospatial Analysis.

Geography Scholarships

The Wayne Abbott Swenson Scholarship

A $1000 scholarship for full-time students majoring in Geography. Mr. Dave Swenson majored in GEO-ANT (a combined Geography and Anthropology program that was only offered at that time) in the 1990s, with a focus on Geography. After graduation, he began working for ESRI. He maintained strong connections with the department, frequently visiting to speak with students, and began offering annual scholarships. Eventually, he and his wife decided to establish an endowed scholarship for Geography majors in honor of his parents.
