About the Program

Dive deep into the nuances of identities, cultures, and histories that shape our world with the Gender, Ethnicity, and Multicultural Studies (GEMS) program. GEMS offers two pathways for exploring critical social issues. The B.A. in GEMS allows you to focus on areas such as African American Studies, Asian Pacific Islander Studies, Chicana/o Latina/o Studies, Native American Studies, or Gender and Sexuality Studies. Our Pre-Credential Option integrates GEMS with educational courses, preparing you for a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential.

The Polytechnic Approach

Gain firsthand insights into cultural advocacy and educational outreach through community-based projects, service-learning programs and research opportunities while debating real-world issues like gender equality and racial justice. From the exciting Day of the Dead celebration we host for the entire campus to work with women in prison (college preparation classes and transition preparation) to the Native American community garden focusing on native foods, you’ll be an agent of positive progress in your undergraduate career and beyond.

Courses

We offer an educational program designed to equip you with the knowledge, analytical skills, and experience necessary to effectively live and work in today’s diverse society. History, culture, and contemporary issues are explored and analyzed through the intersecting perspectives of ethnicity, race, class and gender. The curriculum combines an interdisciplinary knowledge of our socio-cultural world with opportunities in service learning, internships, and community-based research. The Gender, Ethnicity, and Multicultural Studies (GEMS) program has two options: the BA in GEMS and the BA in GEMS Pre-Credential.
