Keynote Speaker
Vivianne Tabuena

"Take action, be involved, and do not be discouraged"

Vivianne Tabuena graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in June 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. She spent her time as a student research assistant for Dr. Xinkai Wu creating tutorial videos and collecting data of student’ outlook and outcome for a course redesign. She was involved in both Achieve and Engineering Scholars Programs with the Office of Undergraduate Research mentoring students and helping them reach their goals and overcome their problems. She also held a seminar for Upward Bound’s low income first generation high school students sharing her thoughts on the importance of research to spark their interest in STEM related courses, specifically Civil Engineering.

As a Transportation Engineer 2 at Washington State Department of Transportation, Vivianne Tabuena leads multiple design and construction projects. In addition to using the skills and knowledge she gained from her undergraduate career, she also uses procedures and guidelines that were established from research studies. She hopes to continue and lead research studies in the future.

Affiliated Programs

SURE

In the eight-week program, participating students learn about lab safety training, work on a faculty-mentored research project, articulate what they have learned on a research poster or oral presentation at the annual summer symposium, network and engage with students from other research labs, and integrate to the four-year institution experience.

NIH RISE

The RISE Program at Cal Poly Pomona is designed to integrate experiences in independent research, faculty and peer mentoring, role modeling and professional skill-building to prepare qualified underrepresented minority (URM) science students for advancement to successful PhD careers in biomedical research. The goal of the RISE Program is to increase the number of URM students admitted to doctoral programs and to give them the academic and research preparation that they need to complete their PhD.

Pomona Valley Review

Established in 2002, Pomona Valley Review is an annual, online liberal arts journal published by English graduate students of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, by faculty, and by continuing graduate students from Cal Poly who are now pursuing doctoral work or developing their professional careers. Our staff includes English M.A. students or Ph.D. students whose focus is either rhetoric & composition, literature, or teaching English as a second or subsequent language; therefore, our perspectives capture the interdisciplinary atmosphere of our program and translate the scene to the page. We not only enjoy classic literature, but also edgy, provocative, and groundbreaking literature which attempts to deconstruct the paradigms that have supported the English intelligentsia over the past centuries.
