Food Science Students Secure a Spot in National College Bowl After Regional Win

A team of Cal Poly Pomona food science and technology students took first place in the Pacific Southwest College Bowl for the third consecutive year.
Camille McCurry (team captain), Alex Mathios, Marina Hernandez, Alexander Gomez, Adan Cadenas-Arzate, Jason Soldo, Michael Daniels, Lucine Besnelian and Siane Kung beat out teams from three other schools in the competition. The College Bowl challenges students on their knowledge of food science and technology, the history of foods and food processing, food law and general food-related trivia.
The Cal Poly Pomona team beat out teams from Chapman University, Cal State Long Beach, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
The event was sponsored by the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA). It was held on March 22 at San Diego State University.
By winning, the Cal Poly Pomona team qualified to compete this July in the National College Bowl at the Institute of Food Technologists annual convention in Chicago.
The students will compete against teams from seven other regions nationwide. Last year, a Cal Poly Pomona team took second place in the College Bowl competition, despite facing teams from larger universities that were mainly composed of graduate students.
Lecturer Karoline Harrison is the Cal Poly Pomona team’s advisor.
