Celebrate a Decade of Innovation at Student Innovation Idea Labs Anniversary Event

For the past decade, Student Innovation Idea Labs at Cal Poly Pomona have been a driving force behind student innovation, entrepreneurship, and hands-on learning. Founded by Olukemi Sawyerr, associate vice president for academic innovation, the labs were created to provide students with the tools, space, and mentorship needed to develop creative solutions, prototype new ideas, and launch entrepreneurial ventures. What began as a single space has now evolved into a network of three dynamic innovation hubs, fostering hands on learning across all disciplines.

The journey began in 2015 with the opening of the original iLab in Building 98C, a collaborative co-working space where students from diverse majors could brainstorm, refine ideas, and develop entrepreneurial ventures. In 2018, the Innovation Orchard was introduced at Ganesha High School, providing a creative workspace where students could test prototypes, explore sustainable design, and collaborate on community driven projects.

As interest for hands-on prototyping grew, Student Innovation Idea Labs expanded in 2019 with the opening of the Maker Studio, a state-of-the-art fabrication lab on the 2nd floor of the University Library, providing access to 3D printers, laser cutters, and advanced designed tools for product development. Most recently, in 2023, a new iLab space in Building 1 was re-opened, further expanding its reach to serve students in all disciplines.

Together, these spaces have transformed the Student Innovation Idea Labs into a hub for creativity and innovation, supporting students in launching startups, building prototypes, and developing real world solutions. Yao Olive Li, director of Student Innovation Idea Labs, emphasized the role its spaces play in student success.

“Over the past decade, Student Innovation Idea Labs (iLabs) has grown into a catalyst for student creativity, entrepreneurship, and hands-on innovation. As we celebrate this milestone, we honor the students, faculty, and industrial mentors who have shaped iLabs into a thriving hub of ideas and impact. This anniversary is not just about reflecting on our past but igniting the future of innovation at Cal Poly Pomona. We invite our internal and expanded communities to celebrate with us and continue building the next generation of innovators and changemakers.”

To commemorate a decade of impact, Student Innovation Idea Labs is inviting the Cal Poly Pomona community to a special 10-Year Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, April 24, from 5 p.m. to7 p.m. at the Maker Studio and Collaborative Space on the 2nd floor of the University Library.

Attendees can explore the Maker Studio exhibition displays showcasing student projects, hear keynote remarks from President Soraya M. Coley and witness the unveiling of “The Point” display, an interactive installation commemorating Student Innovation Idea Lab’s legacy.

One of the most anticipated activities is the Ice Cream Teams Pitch and Tasting Competition, where student teams will compete to create the best new ice cream flavor, followed by a taste test and awards ceremony.
