Cal Poly Pomona Ranked No.1 Polytechnic University for Hispanic Student Success
Cal Poly Pomona is the top ranked polytechnic university on the 2024 “Top 100 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics” list compiled by Hispanic Outlook on Higher Education Magazine. The compilation is based on the number of Latinx students who graduated in the 2022-23 academic year.
Among all U.S. universities, CPP was no. 12 for the number of Latinx students earning Bachelor degrees and no. 92 for master’s degrees awarded to Latinx students.
The university ranked even higher for Hispanic student success in specific majors:
- 1 – Architecture and Related Services
- 4 – Agricultural/Animal/Plant/Veterinary Science and Related Fields
- 4 – Engineering Degrees
- 6 – Business Managements/Marketing and Related Support Services Degrees
Students in those majors identified the university’s emphasis on experiential learning as a primary reason for Bronco student success and lauded Cal Poly Pomona’s welcoming, diverse community.
“The opportunities for hands-on learning and networking in agriculture are unmatched,” said Paulo Garcia Rodriguez, a senior studying agribusiness and food industry management. “The program’s blend of practical fieldwork and business knowledge prepares students for the complexities of agriculture. Working at AGRIscapes has given me valuable fieldwork experience, from planting crops to harvesting, and deepened my understanding of sustainable agriculture.”
Fifth-year architecture student Alexia Orozco appreciates the practical skills taught in the program.
“The instructors teach you the softwares that are essential in the work field, like Revit and Rhino, and how to articulate issues that would occur on the job, such as ADA requirements or coding compliances,” she said. “[My] favorite experience is the studio culture where you learn a lot from your peers whether it’s skills, or about them, and create new friendships.
What stands out for senior Brianna Agueta, who is studying electro-mechanical systems technology engineering, is being “able to develop so many friendships and professional relationships due to the unique community at Cal Poly Pomona that works so tirelessly to connect to students to industry members and opportunities.”
In addition to successfully supporting Hispanic students to graduation, Cal Poly Pomona is also the top-ranked polytechnic university for helping students achieve economic mobility, so they can climb the economic ladder of success according to the Wall Street Journal, CollegeNet and Education Reform Now.
“Choosing Cal Poly Pomona has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” said transfer student Xavier Navarro, a senior studying accounting, who has already had one internship.
“The opportunities here have surpassed my expectations, opening doors I never thought possible. The campus is beautiful, and the professors genuinely care about their students. The ‘Learn by Doing’ motto is truly embodied at CPP. It is going to be a challenge, but if you seek the opportunities available, it will set you up for a lifetime of success and a rewarding career.”
