University Advising Receives NACADA Recognitions

Female advisor meets with male student in office.

Erin De RosaThe National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) has recognized both the Cal Poly Pomona advising community and Erin Lion DeRosa, executive director of University Advising, as part of their annual awards and conference proceedings.

NACADA bestowed CPP with a 2024 Outstanding Advising Program Certificate of Merit for our coordinated advising intervention campaign calendar. Throughout the academic year, advisors in the college student success centers, Undeclared Advising and the Early Support team deploy coordinated advising campaigns to encourage students to connect with them. Using data about student progress, the advisors reach out to students at critical academic milestones or points of academic difficulty. In February, the team was also recognized for the initiative with an annual National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Excellence Award.

DeRosa’s NACADA journal article,   “Academic Advising’s Hidden Role in Fostering Validation/Belonging Leading to Improved Grades,” has also been selected as the common read for the organization’s conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in October. The organization recommends an article for all participants to read and reflect on during the annual conference, which attracts thousands of academic advising professionals from across the globe.

Based on research from her doctoral dissertation, DeRosa’s article explores the quantitative relationships between validation and belonging, advising, and students’ academic outcomes.  In her role at CPP, DeRosa provides strategic leadership and vision for the university’s academic advising strategies, ensuring they align with and support the university’s student success goals.

Cecilia Santiago-González, associate vice president of Student Success, says that this recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication and impact of advisors and the advising leadership team.

"It reflects our ongoing and collective commitment to fostering student success through meaningful and intentional advising practices," she said. "I am also proud of Erin’s leadership and her significant contributions to both our campus and the profession. She plays an integral role in shaping our approach and elevating our efforts to support students and cultivating a culture of care."

Both CPP and DeRosa will be recognized at NACADA’s annual conference in October.
