Cal Poly Pomona Enterprises’(CPPE) BRIC Break has been recognized by the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) as a recipient of one of the 2024 Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards.

The prestigious Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards annually celebrate and recognize exemplary and innovative campus dining services in higher education across North America.

BRIC break employeesBRIC Break entered and placed silver in the “Retail Sales: Single Concept of the Year” category against notable competition in campus dining including the University of Arizona and University of Maryland. The category was open to any stand-alone dining unit that was not inside a marketplace concept.

Participants were tasked with submitting a detailed entry showcasing the retail facility’s menu, design, marketing, nutrition, sustainability and overall wow factor. The submission included numerous images, descriptions and examples of how BRIC Break met the judging criteria.

The Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards submission was a collaboration between the CPPE Dining Services team and the marketing department. The teams worked closely to put together a cohesive and memorable submission for the unit.

“As [CPPE] Dining Service director, BRIC Break represents a significant milestone for Cal Poly Pomona, offering our community locally sourced, clean and healthy food options under our in-house brand,” said Aaron Neilson. “I take pride in this collaborative effort, aimed at enhancing the well-being of our campus through delicious açai smoothies and bowls.”

Brenda Garcia, CPPE Dining Service’s nutritionist, worked diligently to provide precise nutritional information for each BRIC Break menu item for the entry. CPPE Marketing Department highlighted the impactful promotional efforts used to advertise the dining unit on campus including signage, social media posts, coupons and more.

“Collaborating with the team to showcase the essence of BRIC Break was a fantastic experience,” said Garcia. “The teamwork genuinely exemplified our collective efforts to come together and demonstrate our vision. Providing nutritional content and allergen information truly highlighted the inclusivity of dietary preferences for our retail location.”

CPPE will be recognized at NACUFS’ National Conference on July 20 in Louisville, Kentucky alongside other award precipitants.
