Center for Community Engagement Celebrates Cesar Chavez Day with Service at Pomona Farm

Students volunteer at Lopez Urban Farm in Pomona

To honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez and the contributions of farmworkers to our society, about two dozen members of the Cal Poly Pomona community partnered with Lopez Urban Farm in Pomona for a day of service.

On March 23, student, faculty and staff volunteers helped with various farming activities, such as planting new vegetation, harvesting crops and conducting crucial repairs around the farm. The Cesar Chavez Day of Service event was organized by the Center for Community Engagement (CCE), about week before Cesar Chavez Day on March 31.

The day’s activities strengthened bonds within the local community. A total of 28 students, faculty, staff and alumni helped at the farm, which is a Pomona-based initiative focusing on sustainable agriculture, education and community engagement.

“This day of service, brought to life through our partnership with Cal Poly Pomona’s CCE, truly embodies the spirit of volunteerism and community empowerment. The engagement in meaningful activities like spring planting and social justice discussions at our farm has vividly brought forth the impactful legacy of Chavez, bringing together students and community members for a unified cause,” said Lisa Christie, associate director of Community Partners 4 Innovation.

Nathan Weimer, an English literature major and one of the student volunteers, said: “Being a part of the Cesar Chavez Day of Service was an incredibly fulfilling opportunity that allowed me to make a tangible difference in my community, intimately connect with nature and broaden my understanding of the environment. The combination of hands-on farming and learning sessions made this experience not only unforgettable but deeply influential.”

The Center for Community Engagement is planning more opportunities for volunteering for all Broncos, including a 9/11 Day of Service event, with details on registration forthcoming.
