Campuswide Evacuation Drill on March 12, 2024

Staff members emerge from the Student Services Building during an evacuation drill.

To foster a culture of safety on campus and promote emergency preparedness, Cal Poly Pomona will conduct a campuswide evacuation drill on Tuesday, March 12 at 11:45 a.m., coinciding with the start of U-hour.

The evacuation drill will include a test of the university’s Safety Alert System and engaging fire alarms in instructional buildings across campus. The drill will help students, faculty and staff become more familiar with CPP’s emergency preparedness and emergency procedures.

What’s Happening During the Evacuation Drill

At 11:45 a.m., Cal Poly Pomona’s Safety Alert System will send out mass messaging prompting the start of the drill. Messages will be sent via CPP email, phone and text message to all students, faculty and staff. In addition, a pop-up message will appear on CPP-owned computers.

Evacuation coordinators will assist students, faculty, staff and visitors in evacuating the buildings as they make their way to the exit. After safely evacuating the building, all individuals should go to the evacuation site, as directed by the evacuation coordinators. The drill is scheduled immediately before U-Hour so that most students may not need to return to the classroom, unless directed by their instructor.

At approximately 12:00 p.m., a second mass message will be sent out indicating an “all-clear” to conclude the evacuation drill, and normal activities can resume.

Safety Alert System

The Safety Alert System is Cal Poly Pomona’s emergency messaging system that can send messages to phones, email addresses and university-owned computers. It is only used for emergency communication and testing purposes.

To ensure you receive Safety Alerts, update your phone number in the MyCPP portal. Go to Settings, then click on Update Phone Numbers. Make sure to enter your cell phone number under the phone type “Mobile” to receive critical text messages in an emergency.

Preparing for an Emergency

In the event of an emergency or to report suspicious activity, first get to a safe place. To contact UPD on campus, dial 909-869-3070 from your cell phone, use a Code Blue emergency phone on campus or call 9-1-1. If you haven’t already done so, save UPD’s direct line in your cell phone.
