Tomatozania Sale Celebrates Spring with Heirloom Varieties

Thousands of young tomato plants being grown by student for Tomatozania

Cal Poly Pomona's eagerly awaited Tomatozania plant sale features hundreds of tomato varieties for purchase starting March 18 at the Farm Store while supplies last. The Farm Store is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Selections range from the more well-known San Marzano, Better Boy, Green Zebra and Cherokee Purple to the heirlooms and new introductions, such as Abu Rawan, Cosmic Eclipse, Paul Robeson, Tidy Treats and so many more. Varieties include those perfect for planting in large to tiny gardens, as well as those that flourish in containers. All are non-GMO.

All the plants were propagated and grown by Cal Poly Pomona plant science student employees, who also created the labeling, signage and social media outreach. All proceeds benefit the plant science program and students.

The annual sale began in 1997, and its reputation has spread throughout the San Gabriel Valley and beyond. In 2019, approximately 1,600 gardeners purchased more than 6,000 plants. Another 5,000 plants were sold in the weeks following through the retail nursery.
