This Spring Semester, the Career Center is hosting five career-related events each focused on different industries and degree groups.
With various spring career fairs happening, it's important for students to prepare to put their best foot forward to make a good impression on prospective employers. Because most events are happening in-person and a few virtually, students can foster meaningful connections with recruiters and employers in attendance. Students who plan on attending any events must register on Handshake and take the opportunity to strategize in order to stand out and make the most out the events. The following tips and strategies will help students stand out:
Do your research
Interested in speaking to a specific company on their job opportunities? It is a best practice to research the company prior to the event to gain some base knowledge on current projects the company is working on, review their mission statement, and get a better understanding of if this company fits your interests and career goals.
Dress to impress
Impressions matter! Attend a career event in your best business casual outfit that is appropriate for a business event. Dressing up will not only make a lasting impression for recruiters and employers but will help boost your confidence when presenting your skills!
Prepare a well-polished resume
The Career Center's upcoming spring career events offer various opportunities to connect with future employers. Be prepared with a well-polished resume and elevator speech. The Career Center recommends printing at least 10 copies to each event that you plan on attending.
Prepare for an impromptu interview
Some employers in attendance may be interested in doing brief interviews with students who fit what their company is looking for. Take the extra step and prepare yourself by setting an appointment with a career specialist at the Career Center and viewing tips on our "Big Interview" video.
Ensure your computer and surroundings are ready for video calls
This spring, the Career Center is hosting a Virtual Ag Event on Friday, Feb,17 aimed at providing job opportunities to students at the Huntley College of Agriculture. On top of the tips listed above, take the time to ensure you are in a quiet and tidy location that allows for you to showcase your professionality in a virtual setting. Lastly, be sure to test that your microphone and camera are working properly prior to joining a virtual event to make the most out of your experience.
